Does Khan deserve a fight against Pacquiao or Mayweather?

khan666By Wahid Ali: I’ve been following Amir Khan ever since he rose to prominence and won a silver medal as a 17 year old kid at the 2004 Olympic Games – a great achievement. Although like many, I thought he was over hyped when he turned pro and got his just deserves when he did his ‘chicken dance’ against Breidis Prescott, where Khan was blasted to jelly in 54 seconds.

Since that fight, Khan did redeem himself by taking on some exciting and risky fights against top opponents such as Marco Antonio Barrera, Andriy Kotelnik Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana and Zab Judah, all who have been champions – even if some writers here don’t agree.

Yes, even I started to believe the hype and became a fan of his exciting style, reckless it may have been –it was exciting to watch, due to the element of whether his brittle chin would stand-up to a solid left hand. We know where that ended up with Garcia!

However, a lot of boxing fans are starting to get fed up of Khan and his constant bellyaching. Khan is very quick to point the fingers at others when things go wrong, rather than ‘manning up’ and accepting that he is probably not at the top echelons of boxing. Trainer Freddie Roach rebuilt Khan following his destruction by Breidis Prescott, but was quickly sacked by Khan in the aftermath of the Danny Garcia loss in 2012 – Khan had claimed he felt neglected by the Hall of Fame trainer. Khan swiftly changed trainers to the highly respected American trainer, Virgil Hunter. After a number of fights under the guidance of Hunter and credible wins against former champions Diaz, Collazo and Alexander, many in boxing thought that Khan may have turned a corner and possibly merited a fight against P4P ‘king’ Floyd Mayweather.

However, after Khan’s awful performance against Chris Algieri last May (who Manny Pacquiao floored 6 times looking sensational in the fight), Khan duly pointed his finger to Hunter, claiming that he was over worked by the trainer and needs to be his ‘own boss’ for future fights. What really put me off Khan is that after the Algieri fight, Khan claimed that Pacquiao would have lost if the Filipino boxer faced the Algieri he fought. The delusional Khan now believes that Pacquiao has been avoiding him in his never ending pursuit for the Mayweather sweepstakes – If Manny mans up and wants to take the fight then it will happen, but the only fight I am interested in right now is Floyd Mayweather,’ Khan told TheNational.ae. The fact for most boxing fans is that Pacquiao, even with a rotator cuff injury, would demolish Khan and Mayweather would make him look like a clown from start to finish.
