Deontay Wilder punched Stiverne so hard that metal rods in his hand were bent

Bermane Stiverne vs Deontay WilderBy Scott Gilfoid: To show you the kind of incredible punching power that WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (33-0, 32 KOs) has, he was said to have hit former WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne so hard with a right hand to the head that it bent a metal rod that the 6’7” Wilder has in his surgically repaired right hand.

Wilder ended up suffering a broken right hand in that fight. It was the same hand that Wilder broke previously in his career. Even with the broken hand, Wilder dished out a one-sided beating to the 36-year-old Stiverne and was able to easily win the fight by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision.

Goodness knows if Deontay hits his opponent Eric Molina (23-2, 17 KOs) with the kind of right hands that he was nailing Stiverne with, it’s hard to see Molina lasting more than a round or two at best when those two gargantuan heavyweights go at it on Saturday at the Bartow Arena, in Birmingham, Alabama, USA.

“That is true. Somewhere in the third or the fourth round. I realized it because my hand started going numb,” Wilder said. “I knew what it was, because I had it happen before. The first time I did it I knocked him out and I didn’t have to go through the entire fight. With this one it felt OK during the fight. It just let me know that through adversity anything is possible if you have the will and the mind to accomplish your goal. That’s what champions are made of.“

Wilder’s ability to fight through what must have been unbearable pain in his broken hand shows you what kind of warrior spirit the man has. You get guys nowadays that bow out of fights for less than that. Heck, look at Daniel Geale quitting last Saturday night against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto after he was buzzed a bit by a right hand to the head.

Could you imagine if that were Wilder in the ring with Cotto? No way would he have quit fighting if he were dropped. Wilder would have gotten up and looked to poleaxe Cotto with his first right hand to the head.

Molina is going to have to have a high threshold for pain on Saturday because if he’s faint of heart, he’s going to get destroyed in short order by Wilder.
The Wilder-Molina fight will be televised on Showtime Championship Boxing this Saturday, June 13th. Molina has good punching power too going for him, and he’s the better inside fighter than Wilder.

It seems pretty obvious that Molina will be looking to crowd Wilder, to smother him, and look to nail him with his big shots at close range. Wilder will need to get to Molina with a straight right hand before he get in close because otherwise Molina will try and bang him out on the inside.
