Carl Frampton Looking to Impress With Big Win on PBC Debut

frampton4By Jonathan Gonzalez: IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton’s rise seemed inevitable given his amateur background as one of Ireland’s most successful amateurs in recent years. Now, with a PBC date on July 18th creeping up, it seems that Frampton is on the cusp of breaking out to mainstream boxing audiences. He’ll be facing Alejandro Gonzalez Jr., an experienced Mexican fighter, who carries a record of 25-1-2 (although against no notable opponents).

The fight will take place in El Paso, TX (chalk another one up for the bizarre matchmaking and venue selections made by Al Haymon & Co.), but nonetheless Frampton takes the task on with a professionalism characteristic of an assassin – quiet, focused, and determined.

Already something of a commodity in his native Ireland, Frampton’s following in the rest of the UK includes thousands of loyal fans. Now, he has the opportunity to expand his dominion towards new lands unfamiliar with “The Jackal”.

“I feel I am the best super-bantamweight in the world and I am excited to box in front of a huge television audience in the UK and USA,” said Frampton to theguardian.com of his introduction into the PBC circuit, which has brought boxing back into primetime free television.

While Frampton, 28, only holds a record of 20-0, his poise as a professional fighter is astounding. He’s had a pair of fights against former champion Kiko Martinez, and rugged challengers like Chris Avalos, but the demand for greatness is great. We’ve seen what he can do against those fighters, but the promise that some fighters show early isn’t always there for the long run.

Granted, he still has a long way to go, the stars seemed aligned for Belfast’s native son. There are still fights with the super bantam-boogeyman Guillermo Rigondeaux, an obvious domestic scrap with Scotsman Scott Quigg, Mexican Leo Santacruz (also promoted by Hayman), and other names in and around the division that could suffice in helping bring Frampton to the forefront of the boxing world. Maybe he’ll win some, maybe he’ll lose some.

The important thing is that he continues his march and keep on fighting and keep on making his name known. Tune into PBC on CBS July 18th and prepare to be dazzled.
