By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia thinks the loss by former three division world champion Adrien Broner (30-2, 22 KOs) last Saturday night at the hands of Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16 KOs) is going to be a big hit to Broner’s marketability. While Garcia does think the 25-year-old Broner can come back from the loss to become a successful fighter, he thinks he needs to throw more punches.
Broner isn’t going to win a lot of fights if he allows himself to get outworked by high volume punchers like Porter. To be sure, it was a bad style match-up for Broner from the moment the contracts for the fight were signed, but Broner should have been able to throw more punches than he did.
Broner wants to become a pay-per-view fighter, but that’s going to be next to impossible for him to achieve that now that he’s lost another fight. This wasn’t Broner’s first loss unfortunately for hm. It was his decent defeat, and his second loss in his last five fights.
Broner isn’t going to be able to market himself as a pay-per-view fighter if he keeps getting beaten when he steps up a class. Porter isn’t the only fighter capable of throwing a lot of punches. If/when Broner faces the likes of Lamont Peterson, Amir Khan, Ruslan Provodnikov, Viktor Postol, and Lucas Matthysse, he’s going to have to somehow throw more punches because those guys will outwork him if he doesn’t.
“He [Broner] just doesn’t throw his punches,” Garcia said to Fighthype in analyzing Broner’s performance against Porter. “He’s too worried about holding and not getting hit. I do think so [Broner’s marketability has taken a hit]. He’s very flashy, he talks a lot. For him to perform like that, it does hurt.”
Broner can definitely bounce back with his career, but he’s going to need to be matched up against certain types of fighters for him to find that success. Broner isn’t adapting and improving from the flaws in his game that were highlighted by Marcos Maidana and Emmanuel Taylor in the past.
Broner still doesn’t throw enough punches, he’s holding too much, and putting too much emphasis on his defense rather than his offense. Porter showed definite improvement in his fight against Broner compared to how he fought against Kell Brook in his loss to him last year in August.
Porter no longer lets himself get clinched 10+ per round like he did in the Brook fight. Porter was able to fight through many of Broner’ attempts at clinching, and continue to work on the inside.
“He can bounce back. I don’t know about his training,” Garcia said. “I don’t know if he had any injuries. He could have done a little better. I think he should have started early. He started off too late. It was too late. One round wasn’t enough to win a fight.”
If Broner were able to fight as aggressively in every round like he did in the 12th round against Porter, he’d a lot better fighter. Broner was able to drop Porter in the 12th with a left hook, and land a lot of good shots.
