Broner: I’ll be taking over boxing after Mayweather is gone

Broner says his performance on Saturday night against former Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) will be a showcase of him revealing to the fans what they’ll be getting from him in the future once Mayweather walks away.

It’s still up in the air whether Mayweather will be retiring after his September 12th fight or not. He’s saying that he’ll be done after his September fight, yet he’s also saying that he wants to fight his 50th fight, which means that he would be coming back next year to finish out his career.

“I will show everybody that I will take over the sport of boxing after Mayweather’s 36 minutes are up,” Broner said via Fighthype. “I feel nobody is on my level.”

If Broner is going to be the guy that takes over for Mayweather as boxing’s No.1 fighter, then Broner is going to need to find a weight class where he can dominate and look good enough to make fans want to pay to see him fight.

Right now, I don’t think 140 or 147 are the weight classes where Broner can excel enough to become Mayweather’s replacement. He’s not good enough in those weight classes for him to take over for Mayweather.

Broner was at his best when he was fighting at super featherweight and lightweight. But at 25, he might not be able to get down to those weight classes any longer. This means that we could be seeing the finished product of Broner at 140 and 147, and that’s not good for him.

Broner looks slow, flat-footed and not that good of a fighter to ask fans to pay to see him fight. He’s not another Gennady Golovkin type fighter who makes it exciting each time out. Broner is more of a pot shot fighter who wins 12 round decisions over guys like John Molina, Carlos Molina and Emmanuel Taylor. It’s not a good sign that Broner hasn’t been able to score any knockouts since he moved up from the lightweight division. He has to win by decision, and that’s not the type of fighter that fans are looking for in a superstar.

If Broner wants to replace Mayweather as the next star in the sport, then he’s going to need to find some punching power somewhere because he’s not able to KO anyone at 140 and 147.

Porter has a good chance of ruining Broner’s dream of replacing Mayweather. If Porter jump on Broner and outwork him like he’s done with his other opponents, then Broner is going to be stuck as just another Mayweather imitator.

There are a lot of fighters that imitate Mayweather’s fighting style, but only few of them find success. I think Broner can have a successful career, but not as a PPV fighter. He might win some more world titles at some point, but he’s not likely to keep them for long.
