margarito34By Demetrius Luke: After four years since his last fight in 2011, former three time welterweight world champion Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27 KOs) has been training very hard and is seriously considering returning to the sport at light middleweight or middleweight.

Margarito retired in 2011 after losing his rematch against Miguel Cotto and before that losing to a decision to Manny Pacquiao in 2010 in a catch-weight fight at 150 pounds for the vacant WBC junior middleweight title at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Margarito was forced to retire due to a severely injured right eye which was the result of taking a lot of big shots of Pacquiao in their fight in 2010. Margarito suffered a fracture of his left orbital bone in the Pacquiao fight.

After being evaluated by specialists he says the eye is now 100% and he believes he can still make a statement in the sport of boxing at the age of 37.

”I need to talk to my family” Margarito told ESPN Deportes. ”Yes, I have thought about it because my eye is one hundred percent, but I do have the urge and it needs to be discussed. I was surprised at how good I have done in the gym, because I’ve been retired for so long”.

Margarito is a former three time welterweight champion, winning the WBO, WBA and IBF welterweight championships. He was under suspicion of using illegal hand wraps in his first fight against Miguel Cotto a fight in which he won, he went on to lose the rematch later on.

He says he would like to fight the best with names such as a rubber match against Cotto or a super fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in his eye sight.

”Middleweight and junior middleweight are by far the most interesting divisions. Right now I am up to 175 pounds, I need to get down to 154 pounds or stay at 160. Obviously I would like to go against the elite, with anyone…. Cotto, Canelo, those who say they are the best, I feel good in all aspects”.

Margarito’s surgically repaired left eye swelled up immediately in his last fight against Cotto in 2011. The swelling eventually caused the fight to be halted.
