By Kyle Giles: As the summer time approaches the infamous topic of who Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to face in his final fight begins to gather pace. There is an exhaustive list but who is really in the position to face the welterweight champion?
Amir Khan – Although the momentum for a fight between the two has been gathering pace for a while now, is Khan a worthy opponent considering his extremely padded record? The public says yes, but many experts believe Khan will pose little if any threat at all. The fact people are talking about the potential fight in September, indicates that a former world champion under the name of Chris Algeri is not being taken seriously at all. So keep an eye out for Friday night!
Manny Pacquiao (rematch) – This is not likely after the recent fall out of ‘was he injured or was he not?’ The peoples champion lost a lot of respect after a very underwhelming performance. Floyd’s tactical ability was amplified under the term of ‘extraordinary’ by the weight of expectation on a boxer once voted ‘fighter of the decade’. It took 6 years to make the fight happen and when it did, it failed to live up to the expectation. I don’t think people will be willing to $100 U.S dollars for the rematch.
Danny Garcia – This guy never gets a mention but Danny Garcia has cleaned up the 140 pound division and perhaps is ahead of anyone in terms of merit. Although the desire for Garcia vs. Adrien Broner is out there I think many already know the conclusion of this one. Garcia probably, well almost certainly won’t defeat Floyd, but does in fact deserve his crack at the champ. Plus if anyone has earned the payday it is him.
Gennady Golovkin – This guy is perhaps the recognized future pound for pound king. His relentless path of destruction shows no sign of stopping and on numerous occasions has noted he is willing to come down in weight to face Floyd. Although he is destroying any individual put in front of him, he hasn’t really faced an elite level opponent as of yet. This could go one of two ways, either Gennady connects with his powerful punching power, in which case I don’t think Floyd has much chance; or Floyd outsmarts the Kazakhstan bomber and picks him of round by round like he has done 48 other opponents. Let’s remember although Golovkin has phenomenal punching power, he is prone to taking hits from lesser fighters.
