Victor Ortiz wants Mayweather rematch in September

Image: Victor Ortiz wants Mayweather rematch in SeptemberBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (30-5-2, 23 KOs) figures that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) owes him a rematch after their fight in 2011. Mayweather knocked Ortiz out in the 4th round in that fight shortly after Ortiz had fouled him with what appeared to be an intentional head-butt.

Ortiz feels that Mayweather owes him the rematch due to the way he cold-cocked him with a left-right combination while he was apologizing to him over his head-butt.

The 28-year-old Ortiz’s chances of getting a rematch against Mayweather in September, or beyond that are incredibly slim. The reason for that is because Ortiz has done zero since his loss to Mayweather. Since that fight, Ortiz has fought only three times, losing two of them in stoppage defeats to Josesito Lopez and Luis Collazo.

In Ortiz’s last fight, he defeated light welterweight Manuel Perez. Ortiz’s record in his last three fights is 1-2. That’s not good, and at this point he’d be lucky if he could get a fight against someone like Marcos Maidana.

“Why do I know I can beat him now? I just turned 28. When we’re in the ring, I’ll match his speed. I’m bigger than he is,” Ortiz said via theplayerstribune.com. “He clearly owes me a rematch, and the world knows it. So that’s my message to Floyd: Give the people what they want.”

Ortiz sounds like he’s dreaming. The world isn’t calling for Mayweather to face Ortiz again. In fact, if Mayweather were to take that fight again, he’d receive heavy criticism from the hardcore boxing fans for him choosing a guy whose career has really sunk in the past four years.

The casual boxing fans wouldn’t be interested in a Mayweather-Ortiz fight because not enough of them would remember Ortiz from years earlier when he was briefly the WBC 147 pound champion. The fans that do remember Ortiz will likely remember how Mayweather embarrassed him in 2011, and they won’t be excited at seeing Mayweather fight him a second time.

Ortiz has fought only three times in the last four years. That’s less than one fight per year. How can Mayweather take a guy like that seriously when he’s not fighting on a regular basis and when he’s not winning most of his fights? Losing to Mayweather is one thing, but losing to Collazo and Josesito Lopez is a completely different thing.

Ortiz isn’t a 1st tier type fighter at this point in his career. If he wants the big fights against the big names, he’d going to need to work himself back to that level. However, it’s going to take Lopez too long for him to get to the level where he can fight the top names. By the time that Ortiz does take his career back to where he was before his loss to Mayweather, it’ll be too late because both Mayweather and Pacquiao will have retired.
