So who takes over as “The Man” once Mayweather and Pacquiao retire?

Floyd MayweatherBy David: Last night/this morning one of the biggest questions in boxing over the past half a decade was answered when Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0, 26 KOs) convincingly beat Manny Pacquiao to confirm who is the greatest boxer of the past twenty years and confirm his all time status but now there’s another big question; who takes over from the big two as “The Man” in the sport.

For a decade we’ve been lucky to have the big two carry the sport on their shoulders and produce some of the biggest and best fights in history. But Floyd has said he’s fighting once more in September then done with the sport.

Whilst I honestly believe last night was the end for Manny as a fighter on that level, and he maybe has a couple left before going into full time politics.

For me the possible long term candidates to genuinely be pound for pound stars who can move up weights and continue winning are Saul Alvarez, Terence Crawford, Carl Frampton, Keith Thurman and Demetrius Andrade, although I don’t think they’ll be on the same level as Floyd or Manny as PPV draws.

I’d like to include the unbeaten WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward and WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to the list of fighters that can carry the sport in the future, but with both men already being over 30, I don’t know if either will become bigger stars than they already are seeing as they’ve long been seen as the best in their main divisions for some time and may need to move up quickly to establish themselves as the best in another division.

Amir Khan claims he’s “been offered fights against either Floyd or Manny next up” already

Not even 24 hours have passed and the dust barely settled on “The Fight of The Century” between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, yet Amir Khan has claimed to have been told by both men’s management that both men want to fight him next up.

Amir claims Leonard Ellerbe said to him “he’s (Floyd) ready when you are” whilst Manny’s team said “look Amir, we think it’s the right time to have the fight between you and Manny next up” but as has been seen countless times Amir Khan uses both men’s names every time possible to keep himself relevant and come across as if he’s on their level.

He also said of the two he’d take the fight with Floyd first because he “believes he really has his number” although is in “pole position to fight either” but has to focus on Chris Algieri first off which is a fight he should easily win as Algieri is a decent yet weak punching Light Welterweight that’s stepping up in weight and is on the back of a loss in which was knocked down SIX times.

Personally I take what Amir is saying with a HUGE pinch of a salt seeing as he CAN’T fight in September due to Ramadan and Floyd has it set in stone that’s when he’s next and lastly ever fighting next, secondly Manny will almost surely fight a Top Rank stable member to help his confidence after last night.
