Floyd Mayweather vs Manny PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: After watching his fighter get schooled for 12 rounds by the best fighter on the planet, trainer Freddie Roach says he would love for Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) to be given a rematch against WBA/WBC/WBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) if he sees fit to give Pacquiao a second chance. Roach wants Pacquiao to have an opportunity for redemption after he was soundly beaten by a 12 round unanimous decision tonight.

“We’d love to do it again,” Roach said about Pacquiao getting a potential rematch against Mayweather per Dan Rafael.

As you can see it doesn’t end easily when you beat Pacquiao. They wants rematches even when he’s soundly beaten. We saw that after Pacquiao was knocked cold by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012, and now we’re seeing tonight with Mayweeather dominating Pacquiao. There’s one problem with Mayweather giving Pacquiao a rematch. Who would want to see a second fight between them after the one-sided fight we saw tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada? How do you sell a second fight between Pacqiao and Mayweather after what we witnessed tonight?

I don’t think it’s possible. The only way you could sell a second fight is if a whole new group of casual boxing fans took interest in the match-up, and weren’t aware that Pacquiao had been trounced by Mayweather in their first fight, otherwise there would be zero interest. But let’s say for the sake of argument that there was a second fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao. I think for that to happen, they would have to drop the PPV prices dramatically down to the $60 region from the $100 we saw tonight, because I can’t see no one wanting to pay that kind of cash to see a second Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. I just don’t see it.

Pacquiao needs to pick up some good wins over a few high level fighters at welterweight in order to redeem himself from his loss tonight. It’s too late for him to undo what happened tonight, but Pacquiao can still pick up the pieces of what’s left of his career and move on and get some solid wins under his belt so that boxing fans can partially forget about the defeat. If I were Pacquiao, I would put some pressure on his promoter Bob Arum to stop matching him against his Top Rank stable fighters, and instead put him in with high quality fighters like Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Marcos Maidana, Demetrius Andrade, Gennady Golovkin, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs. Those are the guys that Pacquiao needs to be fighting, not Brandon Rios, Chris Algieri and Tim Bradley.
