Pacquiao will probably need to take pay cut for Mayweather rematch

pac009By Chris Williams: If former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao (56-6-2, 38 KOs) wants a second shot at getting the green against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) next year, Pacquiao will need to agree to the right purse split of the revenue in order to make that fight happen.

While Mayweather has said that he’s not giving the Filipino fighter a second chance at fighting him because he’s a “coward” and a “sore loser,” Mayweather might change his mind about the subject for the fight split of the loot.

If Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum agree to a purse split of say 70-30 or 75-25, I think Mayweather might agree to give Pacquiao a second fight. But obviously the split that Pacquiao got last time, 60-40, isn’t going to work for a rematch. Pacquiao’s loss combined with his injury and his excuses will likely mean that he’ll need to accept the much smaller money the second time around.

A lot of boxing fans are still furious Pacquiao over his shoulder excuse, and with him still insisting that he won the fight. For that reason, I don’t think Pacquiao will get any more than a 70-30 split of the cash at best, but more likely 75-25 in a take it or leave it offer. If the Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch brings in over 3 million buys next year in 2016, it still gives Pacquiao a lot money even with him only getting 25% of the loot.

We could be talking about a nice $50 million payday for Pacquiao compared to Mayweather’s $150 million. I think that would be a good deal for Pacquiao because he’s not going to make that kind of money against any of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters. If Arum drags Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley or Chris Algieri back in the ring for Pacquiao to fight in 2016, we’re probably looking at Pacquiao making a little over $20 million or less once his trainer Freddie Roach, Arum and his other team members get their cut. But a second fight against Mayweather would give Pacquiao at least $50 million, and that’s money that he wouldn’t be getting otherwise from anyone else that Arum could bring in. I really don’t think boxing fans want to see Pacquiao fight Rios, Algieri and Bradley again, but I’d be willing to bet that Arum is going to trot one of those guys out next year for Pacquiao to fight if he can’t get the rematch against Mayweather.

Unless Pacquiao is willing to accept a 75-25 split of the money next time, I don’t see Mayweather giving him a second shot. I really don’t. Pacquiao’s injury, which wasn’t revealed to the Nevada State Athletic Commission until the night of the fight, was a real disappointment for the fight. I think Pacquiao should have postponed the fight. But the second time around, I don’t see him getting anywhere close to what he did last time due to the things that took place. But the good news for Pacquiao is he’s already made a lot of money off of the first fight, so it shouldn’t worry him if his split is going to be less the second time around. At least he’d he still be getting a lot of money in facing Mayweather. The split obviously would be more if Pacquiao were to have beaten Mayweather on May 2nd, but the fact is he didn’t. Pacquiao lost the fight by the scores of 116-112, 118-110 and 116-112. You can say that the scores of 116-112 were very generous to Pacquiao because he got dominated by Mayweather.
