Pacquiao didn’t have a game plan for Mayweather fight, says Robert Garcia

1-MAYPAC-FIGHTNIGHT-TRAPPFOTOS-5147By Chris Williams: Robert Garcia, the trainer or Marcos Maidana, says he was disappointed in the performance from former WBO 147lb belt holder Manny Pacquiao and his team in his 12 round unanimous decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their fight of the century on May 2nd.

Garcia didn’t see any real game plan from Pacquiao’s team in that fight, and he felt that he didn’t do a great job in giving Mayweather a competitive fight.

“Mayweather did what he had to do, but I was a little disappointed more in Pacquiao,” Garcia said via Fighthype. “I thought he was going to give him a better fight.”

The reason why Pacquiao didn’t give Mayweather a good fight was because Pacquiao didn’t appear to have a plan-B, C, D or E. Pacquiao looked like he came into the fight with the same plan that his trainer Freddie Roach has been talking about endlessly for many years. That plan was for Pacquiao to attack Mayweather with an in and out style. When that failed to work, Pacquiao didn’t have a plan-B to resort to. A natural plan-B would have been for Pacquiao to get in close and try and smother Mayweather in the same way that Marcos Maidana had in his first fight with him in May 2014. Whether it was a case of Roach not even bothering to have a plan-B or Pacquiao not being quick enough mentally to use a plan-B is open to debate. All I know is that Pacquiao failed to use a different plan when his first plan failed to pay off.

“They didn’t have a game plan,” said Garcia. “It looks like they froze.”

They froze all right. Roach and Pacquiao mentally froze for the fight. There were no adjustments made in that fight from Pacquiao’s side. Roach was blabbering in the corner like always, but if he did come up with any gems of advice to give to the Filipino fighter, it must not have been followed by him.

It would have been interesting to see how Pacquiao would have done against Mayweather if Garcia were his trainer. I think Pacquiao would have done a much better job against Mayweather than we saw on May 2nd because Garcia would have trained Pacquiao enough to where he would have stayed on top of Mayweather and not given him any space to get hi shots off. Garcia likely would have had a plan-B, C, D and E if the original plans failed to work.
