Mayweather takes shot at Pacquiao: “Winners win and losers have excuses”

1-MAYPAC-FIGHTNIGHT-TRAPPFOTOS-9618By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. assumed that he would be given full credit by fans after beating Manny Pacquiao by a fairly lopsided 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night in their long-awaited big money fight in Las Vegas, but instead Mayweather’s had to listen to excuses from Pacquiao about him coming into the fight with a preexisting shoulder injury.

While some fans recognize Pacquiao’s excuse as being just that, an excuse to cover up the embarrassment of having been soundly beaten by Mayweather, other fans aren’t ready to give Mayweather credit for the victory because he beat an injured Pacquiao.

Mayweather had this to say about Pacquiao’s excuses on his Instagram account: “19 years in the fight game and I’ve had one excuse: ‘Don’t have an excuse.’ Winners win and losers have excuses.”

I think for a lot of fans, they were really surprised to see Pacquiao stoop to the level of making an excuse after his loss to Mayweather. I don’t think too many boxing fans were ready for that kind of thing from Pacquiao because they’d never seen it from him before. But then Pacquiao had come off even worse with him saying that he thought he won the fight. That made Pacquiao look out of touch with reality because he had to have gotten an idea of how outclassed he was by Mayweather last Saturday night at the MGM Grand.

Pacquiao has been in the fight game for 20 years, and by this point in time he’s got to know whether he’s winning or losing a fight. But perhaps he’s so used to winning his fights that he’s just not able to comprehend that he could actually lose a fight by a decision. Part of that might be the result of all the soft match-making his promoter Bob Arum has done for Pacquiao in the last six years.

Before last Saturday’s fight, Pacquiao hadn’t faced a real quality opponent since his catch-weight fight against Miguel Cotto in 2009. That wasn’t Cotto at his best weight of 154. That was catch-weight fight at 145 pounds. Cotto is a much different fighter now that he’s nine pounds heavier and a lot stronger than the fighter that Pacquiao fought.

Mayweather said he might give Pacquiao a rematch in September, but he still doesn’t sound entirely sure of whether he’ll do that are not. In an interview with Fighthype, Mayweather said that his fight in September will still be his last fight of his career. It’ll be up to Arum and Pacquiao to change his mind by agreeing to a purse split that will make it worthwhile for Mayweather to give him a second shot.
