Mayweather Sr. thinks fans won’t pay for a Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch

1-11-4By Chris Williams: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. doubts that there will be much interest from boxing fans in a second fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao due to how one-sided their May 2nd fight was and how “terrible” Pacquiao looked.

Floyd Sr. doesn’t see a rematch between the two fighters as being necessary because the outcome would be even more one-sided than the first fight. Mayweather has already said that the Filipino star won’t be getting a rematch due to the excuses he made for his loss. But if Mayweather does change his mind to give Pacquiao a rematch next year, Floyd Sr. sees it being a one-sided fight from start to finish.

It might be a mistake for Mayweather to bother throwing a bone to Pacquiao by giving him a rematch after the one-sided nature of their “Fight of the Century” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. A rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao only makes sense if Pacquiao is able to collect some good scalps by coming back from his injury to defeat the likes of Amir Khan, Keith Thurman and Kell Brook. Short of that, I don’t think you can sell a second fight between them. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum wants to put Pacquiao back in with Mayweather once heals up from his shoulder surgery next year.

“He made so many mistakes; he was wild all night,” Mayweather Sr. said about Pacquiao via Thaboxingvoice.com. “I ain’t never seen him throw one straight punch, throw one hook. Manny looked terrible. It ain’t worth watching [a rematch]. I don’t think as many people paid for it this time, won’t pay for it again. It ain’t necessary to do it again because the same thing going to happen.”

There would still be a lot more boxing fans interested in seeing a second fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao than there would be in seeing them face other opposition like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Brook, Khan, Thurman or Danny Garcia. The interest from the second Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would be coming largely from the casual boxing fans, who have a short memory for what takes place in the boxing world. There would still be enough of them who hadn’t seen the first fight for them to be interested in the rematch. But with that said, a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao would likely be even more one-sided than the first fight because Mayweather has Pacquiao’s number now and he would probably make it a terribly one-sided mismatch.

“Where’s all the speed everybody talking about,” Floyd Sr. said about Pacquiao’s hand speed. “All that jumping around, he wasn’t able to do much of that…He ain’t do nothing spectacular but throw wild punches.”

Pacquiao’s attacking style only seems to work on limited fighters who don’t know how to counter or catch him when he’s recklessly charging forward. Pacquiao met his match against Juan Manuel Marquez, a great counter puncher who arguably beat Pacquiao all four times he fought him. Mayweather was even better than Marquez, and totally took advantage of Pacquiao’s reckless fighting style.

When asked who Pacquiao will fight next in September, Floyd Sr. said “I have no idea.”
