Floyd Mayweather Sr. says that even if Floyd agreed to face the taller 5’10” Golovkin at 154, the Kazakhstan fighter wouldn’t weigh anyway near that by the time that he got in the ring.

Floyd Sr. estimates that Golovkin might rehydrate up to 180 on the night of the fight, and that in turn would give him a huge weight advantage over Mayweather Jr. But with that said, Floyd Sr. still thinks that Mayweather would likely win the fight, but it would be a lot tougher than it would be if the two of them were at the same weight, which is physically impossible. For this reason, Floyd Sr. is against his son facing Golovkin in the future.

“I would say something about this GGG. GGG, hey, if GGG can make weight, that would be different, but — no, no, we not fixing to fight no damn giant,” Floyd Sr. said via proboxinginsider. “I’m going to tell you like this right here. He [Golovkin] comes down, he be at 154, by the time he eats and fight that night, maybe 180, you just don’t know, man. People can eat up stuff, man, and hey. He don’t need to fight nobody like that, man.”

Golovkin is really the same weight as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter that Mayweather defeated in 2013. If Golovkin drains down to 152 of 154, it’s doubtful he’ll be able to put on 25 pounds by rehydrating. Golovkin usually rehydrates to 170 to 175 pounds on the night of his fights.

There’s no reason why Golovkin would come in heavier for a fight where he has to drain down six to eight pounds to make weight. At the most, Golovkin might be able to rehydrate to 170 pounds. That would give him a weight advantage of perhaps 20 pounds. In Mayweather’s first fight against Marcos Maidana in May of 2014, Maidana rehydrated to 165 pounds.

Mayweather was able to handle his weight without too many problems. If Golovkin rehydrates to 165 to 170, he’s going to be likely weaker because of him having to drain down to 152 to 154 to make weight.

“Now they say that Floyd won’t beat him, but I’m just telling you because, the guy is probably just so big and strong, man,” Floyd Sr. said. “Floyd probably, all he would be doing is, he’d take a lot of punches. He’d come in, Floyd would run the stuff off of him. But the whole thing is, it’d be a struggle, but Floyd probably could beat him. I can’t say that he can’t beat him.”

If Mayweather makes it the full 12 rounds without getting knocked down, he’d beat Golovkin. But it would require for him to use a lot of movement for the full 12 rounds because Golovkin would be looking to cut off the ring on him all night long so that he can try and score a knockout.
