Mayweather says people should be upset with Pacquiao rather than him

1-MAYPAC-FIGHTNIGHT-TRAPPFOTOS-5147By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. thinks fans should be upset with Manny Pacquiao rather than himself for how their fight on May 2nd wound up. Some boxing fans aren’t happy that the fight turned out to be less than what they expected it to be.

They assumed that it would be a lot of brawling. However, Mayweather thinks that Pacquiao should be stuck with the blame because he’s the one who used to throw 1000 punches in his fights.

Against Mayweather, Pacquiao threw a little over 400 punches. Mayweather says Pacquiao couldn’t set any traps to get to him, and that was his own fault.
Mayweather’s hard right hand counter shots had the effect of making Pacquiao cautious in the ring, as he didn’t want to get hit with that punch while rushing Mayweather.

Early in the fight, Mayweather made Pacquiao pay each time he bum rushed him to try and land his shots. After the first two rounds, Pacquiao stopped rushing Mayweather and instead stood on the outside most of the time doing zero.

“If people want to be upset, be upset with the guy that couldn’t set the trap for Floyd Mayweather,” Mayweather said to SiriusXM’s Shade 45 Radio. “Be upset with the guy that used to throw 1,000 punches but then resorted to throwing 400 punches.”

Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach had to know that the only way to beat a classic counter puncher like Mayweather was to put a lot of pressure on him. But for some reason, they failed to do that, and that makes you wonder whether Pacquiao didn’t have the heart to fight the way he needed to in order to win. Marcos Maidana, who had fought Mayweather twice previously, did a far better job of applying pressure against Mayweather than Pacquiao did. Maidana did a better job against Mayweather in both fights, because he was willing to take shots while coming forward. Pacquiao didn’t look like he was willing to take punches. He fought like a guy who was worried about his chin. I’m not sure if that’s the result of Pacquiao being knocked out three years ago against Juan Manuel Marquez, or simply a case of him just not liking to get hit.

Whatever the issue was, Pacquiao didn’t fight as well against Mayweather compared to Maidana. Pacquiao didn’t put the pressure on Mayweather, and he certainly didn’t throw 1000 punches like his trainer Roach needed him to do in order to win the fight. Roach should have been on Pacquiao’s case from the 1st round, telling him over and over again that he needed to walk through Mayweather’s punches, but we didn’t see that.

“It’s not my fault that I was able to alleviate anything that he was able to do,” Mayweather said. “Whatever you best attribute is, I take it away from you — disarm you.”

Mayweather’s job was made much easier due to the fact that Pacquiao didn’t want to pressure him the way he needed to. Pacquiao got caught up in playing a safety-first type of fight and that made it easy for Mayweather to win.
