Mayweather not saying who’s next for him in September

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny PacquiaoBy Scott Gilfoid: Despite Amir Khan saying that he was offered the next fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. by his manager Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions, Floyd is saying he wants to enjoy himself after his impressive 12 round unanimous decision win of his nemesis Manny Pacquiao last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khan is already talking like it’s a done deal that he’s going to get the fight against boxing’s No.1 star Mayweather, but I don’t think that’s the case.

Mayweather is going to go back and take some time to reflect on the victory over Pacquiao and then map out who the ideal opponent will be for his final fight of his career four months from now in September.

“Let me enjoy my victory,” Mayweather said when questioned by reporters who he’ll fight next in September. “Can I enjoy my victory? Please.”

Well, there it is. Mayweather isn’t saying who he’ll be fighting next, so that kind of blows Khan’s comments out of the water about him having been offered the Mayweather fight by Ellerbe. I mean, if Mayweather is going to fight only one more time, he’ll likely be wanting to fight someone that will get him the most attention and the respect of any fighter in the business.

Now if I were to go over a list of say 10 fighters to choose from, I don’t think I would have Khan in the top 5 of my list, I really wouldn’t. The reason being is he was beaten by Breidis Prescott, Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia in the past, and he’s never avenged those losses. Khan also has a very, very questionable decision over Julio Diaz. If Mayweather wants to get the attention from the boxing community and make a ton of money in the process, I don’t think Khan is the guy.

Here are the fighters that I believe that Mayweather should pick from for his last fight of his career if he wants to wow the fans and cement his legacy in the sport:

1. Gennady Golovkin
2. Keith Thurman
3. Danny Garcia
4. Miguel Cotto
5. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez
6. Peter Quillin
7. Kell Brook

Those are the only guys that I see that Mayweather can impress fans fighting, and I believe there’s a huge gap between Golovkin and the No.2 guy Thurman on the list. I also think there’s a huge gap between Thurman and Garcia. Frankly, the only guy on that list that is worth fighting in my view is Golovkin. The other guys bring nothing, and I don’t see Khan as being worthy for being on the list due to his lack of wins over quality fighters in the last three years. The last good fighter that Khan beat was five years ago when he defeated Marcos Maidana by a 12 round decision. That was the fight where the referee Joe Cortez kept pulling Maidana off of Khan while he was trying to finish a badly hurt Khan off in the last three rounds of the fight. I don’t see that as a legit win for Khan either. I see it more as a draw or a fight that was so controversial that there needed to be a rematch. While Maidana a rematch with Khan the feelings weren’t mutual from Khan’s side so there was never a rematch.
