Marquez open to Mayweather rematch, will make career decision soon

marquez44444By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) says he’s going to make a decision about whether to retire or not within a month from now. Marquez wants to fight once more, and says he’d be open to a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. if the conditions right for the fight.

Marquez believes that the only way he could beat Mayweather is if he knocked him out, because he doesn’t have faith in the Las Vegas judges to give him a decision if it went to the scorecards.

Marquez is still dealing with a knee problem that he suffered last year in the Mike Alvarado bout in May 2014. The knee has been slow to heal, and he hasn’t had knee surgery. If it’s still not healed even after a year of rest, then he’s going to need to make a decision whether to fight with the problem or go ahead and retire.

“If they proposed the fight and the conditions were acceptable, how could I not?” Marquez said via Esto. “But we all know how things are fighting Mayweather in Las Vegas. IN that city, judges protect, and let him do everything. Do you know how you can beat Mayweather? Of course, only by knockout, and how are you going to knockout someone who doesn’t fight?”

Mayweather isn’t going to give an injured Marquez a fight. That’s not going to happen. Marquez hasn’t been in the ring for ages, and he was beaten by Tim Bradley in his fight before the Alvarado bout. Mayweather’s fight against Marquez in 2009 was too one-sided for them to have a rematch. Marquez did beat Manny Pacquiao by a 6th round knockout in 2012, but Marquez has only fought twice since then. He’s not stayed active enough to be relevant.

“I want to keep fighting and mat at least one more match,” Marquez said. “I wish to make another fight because I feel good,” Marquez said. “However, I’m going to make my final decision within a month. It will be where physicians will let me know if I will be well from my injury to one of my knees, which I have treated for a long time.”

If Marquez is going to fight one more time, then he needs to take on someone who isn’t a threat to beating him. It would senseless for him to try and fight someone like IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook or Mayweather. Marquez has won 4 division world titles during his career, and he’d like to win a 5th division title. However, that’s not going to happen if he’s got a knee problem isn’t healing. If Marquez were to go into the ring against Brook or someone like WBA champion Keith Thurman right now, he’d likely lose badly if his knee isn’t healed.
