khan777By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter says that Khan is poised to dominate the 147 pound division. He feels that Khan has the skills to take over the division and carry it on his back. With Floyd Mayweather Jr. about to retire, and Manny Pacquiao looking he’s almost over-the-hill, Khan would be the guy that takes over for them.

I’m not sure if it’s going to work that way because there are guys like Marcos Maidana and Keith Thurman that Khan would obviously need to fight and beat for him to prove that he’s going to carry the division.

“With his ability, with his speed, with his intelligence, he should dominate the welterweight division,” Hunter said via theguardian.co.uk. “The bar is set high because he has a gift…He has to be great because he as all the ingredients to be great; all the ingredients. He’s at the right age; he’s at the right weight. You just don’t squander those kind of gifts.”

With the right kind of match-making, Khan can dominate fighters in the division. I’m not sure that I would say that he could dominate the division though. Khan would need to beat Thurman, Kell Brook and Maidana for that to happen. Thus far, Khan has shown no interest in wanting to get inside the ring with Thurman and Brook. And Khan’s win over Maidana has a question mark over it due to the referee that worked the fight kept getting in the way of Maidana when he was trying to finish off a badly hurt and barely hanging on Khan in the 10th and 11th rounds. I don’t think Khan would have survived that fight if it hadn’t been for Cortez constantly pulling Maidana and Khan apart in the last three rounds.

Khan has a fight on Friday against Chris Algieri at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This is the type of fighter that Khan can beat. If he’s matched up with Algieri types of the next 10 years, then yeah, I can see Khan dominating the welterweight division for the next decade, but that doesn’t mean that he would be the best.

Khan would just be beating the guys that are put in with him, but not necessarily beating the best the welterweight division has to offer. I’m not sure what Khan is waiting for. It looks to some that he doesn’t want to take any risks before he gets a big money cash out fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao. The Pacquiao isn’t going to happen, and the Mayweather likely won’t either.
