Khan: I believe I have Mayweather’s number

1-12-4By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan is hoping he can win the Floyd Mayweather Jr. lottery and get a fight against him next September in what could be the last fight of Mayweather’s 19-year pro career. Khan, 28, wants to be the guy that finishes Mayweather’s career because he thinks his fighting style is all wrong for Mayweather and that he would beat him if the fight were to take place right now.

We still don’t know if Mayweather will give Khan the shot to pull off an upset because he’s not saying yet whether he’ll give Khan what some people believe would be an undeserved fight.

Other than the money he would get and the honor of trying to prove himself against Mayweather, that’s all Khan would get because Mayweather made it clear last Saturday night after his victory over Manny Pacquiao that he’ll be vacating all of his titles on Monday. That means Khan would have nothing to gain from fighting Mayweather other than the money and the chance of giving him his first loss of his career.

“I really believe I have his number,” Khan said about Mayweather to skysports.com. “Financially they know it’ll be a big fight and it’ll be an exciting fight. I think it would be an amazing fight, one that boxing fans all around are talking about because I really believe size is a big factor between me and him and the speed and the power as well.”

Pacquiao is a little taller than Mayweather at 5’10” with longer arms, but Khan is also wild with his punches and he’ll clearly leave himself open if he fights Mayweather. I don’t think it would be an exciting fight at all because Khan fights too much on his back foot at this point in his career, and it would end up being a pot shot duel. There’s no way Khan will win a pot shot fight against Mayweather he doesn’t have his ring IQ in my opinion, and he’s not smart with the way he moves around the ring. Khan seems like he loses his senses a lot of the time with the movement he makes, and it’s mind-boggling some of the stuff he does.

“Before anything I have Chris Algieri to take care of. But I’m ready for whatever Mayweather wants,” Khan said. “It just depends on my schedule this year, but if we could do this year or maybe early next year I will definitely jump to it.”

I don’t know if Khan is aware of it or not but Mayweather has already said that he plans on retiring after his September fight. So if Khan’s schedule isn’t opened for a fight against Mayweather later this year then that’s it. There won’t be another shot for Khan because Mayweather will be retiring and not coming back in 2016 just so he can fight Khan.
