Khan: Canelo would beat Golovkin

By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA 140lb champion Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) says he watched last Saturday night’s fight between IBO/WBA 160lb champ Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) and Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) on HBO, and he feels that Golovkin would lose to former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) if that fight were to get made.

Khan likes Canelo in that fight against Golovkin. Khan says he sees “holes” in Golovkin’s game. It’s a pity that Khan didn’t call Golovkin out like he did with WBC middleweight belt holder Miguel Cotto because I think Golovkin would readily agree to a fight against the 28-year-old Khan.

I just don’t know why Khan hasn’t yet called Golovkin out. It’s too bad because it would be so interesting to see how well Khan does against Golovkin so that he could expose his “holes” in his game that he’s talking about.

“Watching the fights on HBO boxing, I think Canelo would beat GGG,” Khan said on his twitter. “Oscar De La Hoya make it happen. GGG is a beast but I see holes.”

The problem is that De La Hoya doesn’t want to put Canelo in with Golovkin, at least not until Golovkin is 35. That’s what De La Hoya is waiting for. He says he won’t match Canelo against the 33-year-old Golovkin for another two more years.

De La Hoya’s rationale for waiting to make the fight is because it will be a bigger fight in the future by him marinating it, but some boxing fans think that De La Hoya is afraid to put his golden goose in with Golovkin and seeing him get his feathers plucked one by one until he’s no longer golden.

How in the heck can we see these “holes” that Khan is blabbering about if De La Hoya has no interest in putting his golden goose in with Golovkin? It’s not even something we can speculate on because De La Hoya won’t make the fight until Golovkin is nearing 36.

It’s too bad Khan won’t call out Golovkin like he was with Cotto because I really think Golovkin would take the fight with Khan in a heartbeat. Golovkin says he wants to fight in September, and I’d be willing to bet that he and his promoter Tom Loeffler would agree immediately to a Khan fight.

I’m just not so sure that Khan would agree to face a slugger like Golovkin. It’s one thing for Khan to call out a limited fighter like Cotto and another thing entirely for him to call out the guy that Khan sees as being full of holes like Golovkin. Khan would then be forced to expose those holes in real life rather than just flapping his gums about it.

I honestly couldn’t see Khan last more than one round against Golovkin. If Golovkin decided to fight hard and not toy with Khan, I see him knocking the British fighter out in just one round. But even if Golovkin did toy with Khan, I can’t see Khan being able to handle even Golovkin’s punches thrown with moderate power.

Khan will be back in the ring in less than two weeks against former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) on May 29th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It’s unclear why Khan is fighting a light welterweight. He said he’d moved up to 147, but here he is still fighting light welterweights. Go figure. I wonder if it has anything to do with Algieri not having any punching power. Khan should be facing guys in the welterweight division and guys with punching power.
