Kell Brook hoping Mayweather will pick him for a fight after Gavin bout

By Allan Fox: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) is hoping that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will take notice of him after his fight on Saturday night and give him a shot later this year in September in Mayweather’s last fight of his career.

Brook has a fight against Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, England. If Brook winds up looking really good, he has an outside chance of beating Amir Khan for the fight against Mayweather. That would give Brook untold pleasure to get the fight with Mayweather over Khan, who has talked endlessly about wanting that fight for years now.

To some fans, it would be fitting. Khan turned down fights against Brook because he felt he wasn’t a big enough name for him want to share the same ring with. But if Brook is able to face Mayweather in his last fight of his career, it would leave Khan on the outside looking in.

It’s likely that Khan would be green with envy if Brook winds up being picked out by Mayweather in what would be comparable to Brook winning the lottery. Even if Brook lost the fight with Mayweather, the attention and notoriety that he’d get from the fight would take Brook to another level in terms of popularity.

“I need to take care of Frankie first but I would jump at the Mayweather fight in a heartbeat and I still hope it happens. I want to fight the best possible opponents and that includes Pacquiao also,” Brook said to RingTV.com. “I was hoping that Mayweather would keep the belts and unify the entire division against me in his last fight. After all, an American versus a Brit is always a huge event on both sides of the Atlantic.”

It would be a good fight between Mayweather and Brook. It would be even better if they were to face each other in a stadium as large as Wembley with the fans cheering loudly. It would be the perfect venue for Mayweather. He’s pretty loyal to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas though, and it’s not probable that Mayweather would want to fight in another venue for his last fight of his career.

Brook needs to shine against Gavin and do the best he can to ensure that the bigger fights are available to him. If he can’t get the Mayweather fight, he might still be able to land a bout against Manny Pacquiao next year. It would also help Brook if he were open to fighting guys like Lucas Matthysse, Lamont Peterson, Ruslan Provodnikov, Demetrius Andrade, Erislandy Lara and Gennady Golovkin. Brook could either fight the smaller guys at catch-weights or move up to 154 to fight the bigger fighter.
