1-golovkin3 (14)By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn could be about to find another pot of gold with the Carl Froch vs. Gennady Golovkin fight lurking over the possible horizon. With the 37-year-old Froch’s sudden interest in testing himself against the knockout artist Golovkin, it’s a fight that that would catch the boxing public’s imagination.

Hearn doesn’t think the Froch-Golovkin fight would be big enough to stage at Wembley Stadium, but he thinks it would fill the 40,000 seat stadium in Nottingham, UK, according to Boxingjunkie. Now the only question is will Froch agree to fight Golovkin.

Hearn still isn’t sure if Froch will take the fight or not. If he doesn’t, then he’ll either retire or look in another direction for his next fight. Froch had recently been interested in fighting Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. That kind of tells you how Froch was thinking in terms of an opponent.

Golovkin is the complete opposite of Chavez Jr., so it’s unclear if Froch will put his John Hancock on the dotted line for a fight against him. Froch’s legacy is important to him, and Golovkin has the kind of punching power to rewrite Froch’s legacy with a single punch.

Froch made $15 million for his mismatch against domestic fighter George Groves in their fight at the Wembley Stadium in London, UK. The money will be less if the Froch-Groves fight is staged in Nottingham. But there’s enough money to be made from the fight to make it worthwhile. Since Froch doesn’t have any interest in fighting talents like Andre Dirrell or Andre Ward, it puts him in a position where the next best opponent he can fight is Golovkin.

“Everyone’s gone mad for this fight. It’s a great fight,” Hearn said to Boxingjunkie.com. “If Carl’s not motivated for that fight he should never take the fight because it’s a brutal fight. He has to prepare for 12 weeks like an animal; he has to want to fight Golovkin.”

Well, if Froch can’t get motivated enough to get off the sofa to fight a talent like Golovkin, then he really needs to think about hanging up the gloves. The fact is that a lot of people are really excited about the potential for a Froch vs. Golovkin fight. They see this as a bout that Golovkin has a great chance of winning. Froch would likely be the underdog for the fight despite his recent success in batting George Groves around the ring in the UK.

Groves would be moving up to 168 to fight Froch, and he’d also be willing to face him in the UK rather than a neutral country like the United States. What I don’t understand is why Froch doesn’t just face Golovkin in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Froch had been flapping his gums about wanting to fight Chavez Jr. under the bright lights of Vegas. Well, why not fight Golovkin instead over there? At least it would be a neutral country and that would help prevent anyone getting upset after the fight if Froch were to win another controversial decision like the one he had against Andre Dirrell in Nottingham.

You can understand why Golovkin and his management don’t mind facing Froch in the UK. They obviously feel that they would take the judges and referee out of the fight completely by scoring a knockout over Froch. That’s the great thing about being a knockout artist like Golovkin. He never has to worry about being robbed in a fight no matter where he goes.
