By Dan Ambrose: While WBC flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (43-0, 37 KOs) says he wants to fight WBA/WBO flyweight champ Juan Francisco Estrada in a rematch, former WBA/WBO light flyweight champion Giovani Segura (32-4-1, 28 KOs) is saying he’s going to be the one that faces the 27-year-old Gonzalez next.
Having the 33-year-old Segura take the fight with Gonzalez next isn’t a great fight for a couple of reasons. First of all, #7 WBA Segura is coming off of an 11th round knockout loss to Juan Francisco Estrada last year in September.
Segura hasn’t fought since then and he’s not considered a real threat to a fighter in Gonzalez’s class. It would be a good stay busy fight for Gonzalez, but not a particularly entertaining one. Segura was at one time one of the best fighters in the light flyweight division five years ago, but a lot has changed since then. Segura has suffered losses to Edgar Sosa, the fighter that Gonzalez just blew away in two rounds, and he’s been beaten by Brian Viloria and Estrada. The 33-year-old Segura clearly isn’t the fighter that he once was.
“My manager told me that it’s almost official,” Segura said to RingTV.com.
There’s a chance that Segura won’t be the guy that Gonzalez faces next. HBO is probably not going to want to greenlight a fight between Gonzalez and a guy who is coming off of a loss in his last fight against the guy that Gonzalez is interested in facing. HBO will probably prefer to have Roman Gonzalez face either Estrada or WBO super flyweight champion Naoya Inoue if they can get either of those guys to commit to the fight.
Gonzalez, a former three division world champion, is a really dangerous guy to ight, and it’s possible that neither of these guys will be willing to get inside the ring with him. If that’s the case then someone like Segura might be the only one left for Gonzalez to fight. Gonzalez doesn’t have many good options at flyweight because the division is a weak one.
“It motivates me more having this big challenge where everybody thinks I’m gonna lose,” said Segura. “I go back when I fought Ivan Calderon, when I fought [Hernan] Marquez, when I fought Jonathan Gonzalez. Everyone was talking the same thing and here we go again.”
Those fights took place a long time ago when Segura was younger. He’s had a lot of wars during his career, and he’s not the same fighter that beat Calderon and Marquez.
