Fury’s promoter Hennessy hoping to get Klitschko to fight him UK

wladimir123By Scott Gilfoid: Mick Hennessy, the promoter for #1 WBO Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs), is hoping that IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) will travel to the UK to face the 6’9” Fury in one of the stadiums in either September or October.

If the Klitschko-Fury fight is staged in the UK, they can make big money by filling it with fans. A venue like Wembley Stadium in London would be ideal. However, for Hennessy to get his way in getting the 39-year-old Klitschko to travel to the UK, he’ll need to win the purse bid to make that happen.

Unfortunately for Fury and Hennessy, Klitschko will very likely win the purse bid and then choose to stage in the fight in Germany rather than the UK. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind the big money that he’d get in facing Fury in England, but I doubt he’ll be eager to fight in front of a huge stadium full of Fury fans.

“Right now the fight looks like it’s heading for a purse bid,” Hennessy said via espn.co.uk. “There’s a big case for it being held in the UK and big money for it, so I don’t know if it will happen in Germany just because it might go to a purse bid. I think the fight could happen any time from September to November.”

Hennessy and the Klitschko’s management has yet to agree on a contract for the fight, and it’s looking more and more like it’ll go to a purse bid in the near future. Unless Hennessy has big money to win the purse bid, they’re going to have to likely pack their bags and travel to Germany for the Klitschko-Fury fight.

Wladimir has held the World Boxing Organization title for the past seven years since capturing the belt with a 12 round unanimous decision over Sultan Ibragimov in 2008. Along the way, Wladimir has beaten arguably better heavyweights than Fury such as Kubrat Pulev, Tony Thompson and David Haye. Those guys would all likely beat Fury if they were to face him. However, Wladimir is starting to look like a shot fighter who can no longer pull the trigger on his punches.

In his last fight, he looked really poor in beating American Bryant Jennings by a 12 round unanimous decision last April. Wladimir got the win by clinching and moving, but he was unable to pull the trigger on his power shots, and he rarely threw any of them. The 26-year-old Fury might not have been able to compete against an earlier version of Wladimir, but he might be able to beat the 39-year-old version of the Ukrainian fighter.
