Floyd Sr. wants Mayweather to fight Khan in September

khan666By Scott Gilfoid: Out of all the potential opponents there are for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) to wrap his career up against in September, his trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. thinks that he should fight #1 WBC 147 pound contender Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs). Floyd Sr. thinks it would be a good easy fight for Mayweather, and says there wouldn’t be anyone else for Mayweather to fight after the Khan fight even if he were to stick around the sport a little longer.

“A lot of people are talking about Amir Khan,” Mayweather Sr. said via Mlive.com. “Amir Khan might be a good one…I hope that he takes that fight and then, there ain’t nothing else to fight for.”

I for one have zero interest in seeing Mayweather fight Khan. I mean, if Mayweather is going to fight Khan, he might as well fight the recently beaten John Molina (27-6), because I see them both as having similar ring records.

I think there would still be a number of arguably better fighters that would still be out there for Mayweather even after he whipped Khan. How about Keith Thurman and Kell Brook? Those guys are both unbeaten and hold world titles. Khan has lost three times and has controversial wins over Willie Limond and Julio Diaz. You can arguably say that Khan should have five losses on his record, which would then be 28-5 instead of 30-3. You can also make an argument that Khan would have lost to Marcos Maidana if the referee that worked the fight Joe Cortez didn’t get in the middle of Maidana and Khan in the crucial 10th and 11th rounds when Maidana had Khan badly hurt. I think Khan would have lost that fight if Cortez hadn’t separated Maidana from Khan so many times. We would then be looking at Khan with a 27-6 record. We’re basically talking journeyman at that point.

I don’t see Mayweather being ahead if he chooses Khan for his final fight rather than an unbeaten fighter. If it was me, I wouldn’t waste time with Khan, Thurman or Brook. I would choose someone with a fan base in the U.S like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Miguel Cotto. Yeah, Mayweather beat them both before in the past, but he can still make more money fighting them than he would Thurman, Brook or Khan. Mayweather should be maximizing his income with each fight rather than minimizing it.

Floyd Sr. has his reasons for wanting Mayweather to fight Khan. It probably has to do with all the garbage Khan has been talking since 2011 about him wanting to get Mayweather at the right time of his career when he’s heading downward rather than facing him when he was at his best. But I still don’t think it’s a fight that would do anything for Mayweather’s career moneywise or in terms of getting appreciation from fans. Like I said, I think Khan’s record should be 27-6, not 30-3, because his fights against Limond, Maidana and Julio Diaz were controversial ones where Khan would have easily have been beaten with different judges and referees.
