Erislandy Lara doubts Golovkin will fight him now

lara8By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (20-2-2, 12 KOs) doubts that IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) will ever face him after his fight against Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) last Saturday night.

Lara, 32, doesn’t say why he doubts that Golovkin would ever elect to face him, but it could be that Lara believes that Golovkin had problems with Monroe before lowering the boom on him in the 6th round in their fight at The Forum in Inglewood, California. The fight was televised on HBO Championship Boxing in the U.S and a lot of fans tuned in to see it despite the fight turning out to be a mismatch.

“So after last night, GGG Boxing will never fight me and I don’t blame him,” Lara said on his twitter. “I would make him look worse than Canelo.”

For the record, Lara lost to Canelo by a 12 round split decision last year in July. While some fans believe that Lara did enough to deserve the win, the general consensus is that Lara fought too passively by running for 12 rounds to deserve getting the victory. I saw the fight and had Canelo winning based on his superior aggression, but it was definitely a close fight. It was very boring though due to Lara’s running.

It would be a good fight for Golovkin to take on Lara if the Cuban fighter was willing to face him at middleweight rather than at junior middleweight or a catch-weight of 155. If Lara was willing to come up to middleweight, I think it would be interesting for boxing fans to see the difference between how Golovkin handles Lara compared to how Canelo did. If nothing else, it would give fans an opportunity to see the difference between Golovkin and Canelo in handling the same fighter. If Golovkin destroys Lara, you would have to assume that Golovkin would do the same thing to Canelo. It would definitely make Canelo look really bad if Golovkin obliterates Lara because Canelo clearly struggled badly with Lara, and ended up winning a close and controversial decision over him.

Golovkin would prove a lot by facing Lara because this is a guy that not too many people want to fight. The same with WBO junior middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade. If either of those two guys were willing to come up to 160 to face Golovkin, I think either of them would make great opponents for Golovkin’s next two fights in September and December.

Lara will be defending his WBA title next month on June 12th against fringe contender Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-4, 16 KOs) at the UIC Pavilion, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Perhaps if Lara gets through that fight without suffering a cut or some other kind of injury, he might be available to fight Golovkin in September.
