Cotto will shine against Geale, says Roach

cotto7By Dan Ambrose: Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) is going to come out on the losing end on June 6th in his title challenge against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 157lbs, says Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach. He expects Cotto to impress in this fight, and he sees him scoring a knockout.

After Cotto beats Geale, Roach wants Cotto to face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next. The winner of the Cotto-Canelo fight should face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, Roach says. There’s only one problem with that. Roach doesn’t make the fights for Cotto, and he certainly isn’t the one who picks out the fights for the red-headed Canelo.

Even if Canelo does beat Cotto, there’s little chance that Canelo will be facing Golovkin after that. Canelo’s own promoter Oscar De La Hoya said they want to wait two more years before they face Golovkin, who will be 35-years-old by then and presumably ready to be beaten.

De La Hoya says the fight between Canelo and Golovkin will be bigger by then, but many boxing fans believe the real reason De La Hoya is waiting is in order to pick a time when Golovkin starts deteriorating from age. Right now, the 33-year-old Golovkin is still in his prime, and it would be a really bad idea for De La Hoya to let his golden goose fight him because there would be too much of a chance of Golovkin wiping Canelo out within one or two rounds.

“We’ve been working more on his foot and hand speed. I expect Miguel to shine,” Roach said via Fightnews.com. “Work the body, break him down, and hopefully knock him out in the later rounds.”

Cotto and Geale will be fighting on June 6th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight will be televised on HBO Championship Boxing.

Roach had better hope that Cotto can break Geale down and score a knockout because this could prove to be a very difficult fight for Roach and Cotto if they can’t score a knockout in this fight. Geale is a smarter fighter who likes to jab and move all night. He’s someone that is difficult to hit unless you’re really good at cutting off the ring like Golovkin did in his fight against Geale last year.

If Cotto gets beaten by Geale, it’s going to take a lot of the wind out of the sale for Cotto’s big money fight against Canelo. I’m hearing the Cotto-Canelo fight will still take place even if both fighters lose their next fights, but I don’t think a lot of people will be interested in purchasing the Canelo-Cotto fight on PPV under those circumstances.
