“Canelo will fight Golovkin when the time is right,” says De La Hoya

Canelo Alvarez v James Kirkland(Photo Credit:Ed Mulholland/Golden Boy/Golden Boy via Getty Images) By Allan Fox: Now that his flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) has gotten past the formidable James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs) by a 3rd round knockout last Saturday night, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is going to sit down and start planning for Canelo’s next fight in September or October.

One name that won’t be in the equation for the 24-year-old Canelo’s next fight is WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs). De La Hoya says he’s going to make the fight between Canelo and Golovkin when the time is right. Evidently this isn’t the right time to put the fight together, according to De La Hoya.

“He (Canelo Alvarez) is going to fight Gennady Golovkin when the time is right,” De La Hoya said.

Presumably that will be after Canelo fights Miguel Cotto, and possibly Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. You could even throw Joshua Clottey into the mix because he was supposed to fight Canelo last December. The fight was cancelled after Canelo suffered an ankle injury.

De La Hoya will have Canelo fighting in Texas once a year. Golovkin would likely have no problems taking the trip to Texas to face Canelo if the fight were offered to him.

Fighting Golovkin would seem to be the best way for Canelo to win respect from the boxing community. Whether he wins or not, it would still impress fans if he were to take that fight because Golovkin is someone who is perceived to the best fighter at 160. He’s interested in facing the top guys like Canelo, Miguel Cotto, Peter Quillin and Daniel Jacobs, but none of them have been willing to take the fight. It’s possible that some of them could beat him if they took the fight with him, but thus far none of them have shown the interest in wanting to fight him.
Canelo made short work of Kirkland in stopping him with a booming right hand to the head in their fight at the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. After the fight, Kirkland skipped the post-fight press conference and went straight to a nearby hospital to be examined.

“I’m going to get him [Kirkland] back with Ann Wolfe,” Kirkland’s promoter 50 Cent said via Fightnews.com.

Getting Kirkland back with Wolfe seems to be the idea that many people have for Kirkland to help bring him back the success that he had earlier in his career. Wolfe appears to be interested in training Kirkland when he’s ready to come back.
