Calzaghe: DeGale would whoop Froch!

By Scott Gilfoid: Former 168lb champion Joe Calaghe sent in a tweet congratulating James DeGale (21-1, 14 KOs) for his win over Andre Dirrell (24-2, 16 KOs) tonight. Calaghe said that he thinks that DeGale would whip Carl Froch, and he asked for predictions. I don’t know who would win a fight between DeGale and Froch. I just know that DeGale really struggled today in his fight against Dirrell, and outcome sure as heck wasn’t conclusive in my book.

“Congrats to James Degale. I think he’d whoop Froch! Predictions?” Calzaghe said on his twitter.

Froch replied “You didn’t fancy the job.”

I don’t know if DeGale would beat Froch if they were to fight, but let me put it this way: If DeGale got scoring like he did tonight from the judges, then yeah, I can definitely see DeGale beating Froch. But I don’t think DeGale would beat Froch if the scoring made any kind of sense. Heck, the scoring for tonight’s fight was like the judges needed goggles to see because Dirrell sure deserved better scores than these. The judges scored it 114-112, 117-109 and 114-112, all for Dirrell. I don’t agree with those scores.

I felt so bad for Dirrell after the fight. He looked mentally crushed after the scores were announced, like he’d lost his best friend. He was out there and you could tell that he felt that he’d royally robbed by the judges. For Dirrell this hits home even more because he was involved with a controversial decision loss to Carl Froch six years ago in Froch’s hometown of Nottingham. Like tonight, Dirrell fought magnificently in putting on a beautiful display of boxing, and instead of getting the world title belt placed around his waist, Dirrell was given a bitter defeat. He forced to take the long flight home from the cold Nottingham, and let to stew on the controversial defeat the whole way home.

What was really surprising was that all three judges had DeGale winning rounds 1, 5 and 6. Those were rounds that I personally gave to DeGale. I don’t know how the judges could give DeGale those three rounds. Further, two of the judges gave DeGale the 12th. I had Dirrell winning the 12th round easy. DeGale looked like he just stalled out the 12th by playing keep away from Dirrell instead of actively trying to fight. I don’t know how the judges could have given DeGale the 12th. I certainly didn’t. It was stuff like this that really makes you lose faith in the sport. When you get upside down scoring for the fight, and it’s so disappointing.
