Image: Arum expects Mayweather-Pacquiao PPV numbers to go past 4.4MBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum says the pay-per-view numbers released today for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight were conservative estimates, according to RingTV.com. Arum expects the final PPV numbers to hit 4.8 million, but below 5 million.

Those numbers are far fewer than the 6.4 million that were estimated by Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports. It’s possible that the PPV numbers would have been higher if not for the cable outages that took place on the night of the fight which prevented many boxing fans from being able to order the fight.

The early PPV numbers for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight released today with estimates of 4.4 million and total revenue of $400 million.

“Those are just preliminary numbers because that number will rise considerably,” Arum said via RingTV.com . “I don’t know what was being projected going into the fight but everyone did a good job and it’s a splendid number and it has made history. That 4.4 will continue to rise in the months ahead. It won’t exceed 5 million but I would say a good guess is that it will land around 4.8-million buys.”

It’s too bad that we might not see a second fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao next year because it would be interesting to see if Mayweather can whip Pacquiao for a second time. But I think the only way we can see a second fight between the two superstars is if Pacquiao admits that he lost to the better fighter in Mayweather.

It’s kind of sad when a fighter like Pacquiao complains after the fight about a serious shoulder injury that he suffered a month before the fight, and then fails to admit that he lost. By Pacquiao thinking he won the fight, it tells you that he thinks he beat Mayweather with one hand. It comes across like someone out of touch with what happened in the actual fight.

We’re likely going to see Pacquiao and Mayweather going in different directions in 2016 with Pacquiao fighting someone like Kell Brook, Brandon Rios or Terence Crawford. If Mayweather doesn’t want anything to do what he sees as a “sore loser,” then Pacquiao will have very likely wind up facing one of the above mentioned fighters. I can’t see boxing fans having much interest in seeing Pacquiao fight Brook, Rios or Crawford because none of them are big names.

I suspect that Rios will bring in the most money because he’s somewhat known by casual boxing fans from his one-sided loss to Pacquiao in 2013. I just don’t know that a lot of fans would want to ever see a second fight between Mayweather and Rios because it’s not as if Rios has beaten anyone good since his loss to Pacquiao. Rios has a controversial win over Diego Chaves in 2014 and then a win over a shot-looking Mike Alvarado in 2015. Rios really needs to go back and prove that he can beat Chaves without controversy. That’s probably not going to ever happen because Rios had major problems against the Argentinian fighter.
