Image: Algieri: You are going to see a whole new fighter come Friday nightBy Scott Gilfoid: Beware, Amir Khan, you are about to see a brand new Chris Algieri on Friday night when you get inside the ring at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, at least that’s what Algieri is saying. He says he’s made a lot of improvements in his game with the help of his new trainer John David Jackson, and they’re ready to down Khan and ruin his vision of a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Khan wants that fight so badly he can taste it. But the 31-year-old Algieri feels that Jackson has transformed him to a whole new fighter, and he’s ready to spring that new version of himself on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions.

“This was truly the best and most intense training camp of my life,” Algieri said. “Working with John David Jackson has truly been a blessing. He has brought out the best Chris Algieri there is. You are going to see a whole new fighter come Friday night.”

If Algieri is improved, Khan is going to be in deep, deep trouble in this fight. Algieri was a very good fighter before Jackson took over, and I can only imagine how much better he’ll get with the help of someone like Jackson. In the past, Algieri has beaten Ruslan Provodnikov and Emmanuel Taylor. I have my doubts that Khan could beat a guy like Provodnikov, I really do. I think Provodnikov would take whatever punishment that Khan could dish out just so that he could get to his chin, and then spark him out. We saw how much trouble Provodnikov gave both Tim Bradley and Lucas Matthysse. He almost beat both of them, and left Bradley in a concussed state after the fight.

“I am excited to be back in New York and excited to show the world what I am really made of on Friday night,” Algieri said.

This could go really bad for Khan if Algieri improves by 25% or more from the way he fought previously. He already a very good fighter before he added Jackson to his team, but now that he has Jack, the trainer for IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, Algieri could be a whole different animal. He’s already said that Jackson helped engineer what he considers the perfect game plan for beating the 28-year-old Khan. He’s not saying what the plan is, but it’s likely to be a case of Algieri setting a lot of traps to lure Khan in and then closing the trap by nailing him with big shots to the chin.

You have to remember that Khan is going to be trying very hard to look good in this fight because he knows he needs a big win over Algieri for him to have a chance at Mayweather. The thing is if Khan overextends himself by going after Algieri in an overly aggressive way, it could lead to Algieri sparking him out with a big shot. Algieri isn’t known for his power, but he’s got decent power when he loads up on his shots with everything he’s got. In a lot of cases it’s not so much the power but more of a case a fighter having good timing when scoring knockouts. Khan will do the work for Algieri by launching himself at Algieri, and this will lead to him getting nailed by the American fighter.

“I am very confident in my ability and the game plan that coach has come up with for me,” Algieri said.

I can’t wait to see what Algieri’s game plan will be. I’m sure it will be a good one. Jackson is a great trainer, and he’s going to come up with something that is going to be perfect for this fight.
