broner123By Allan Fox: A fight between former IBF 147 pound champion Shawn Porter (25-1-1, 16 KOs) and #3 WBC light welterweight contender Adrien Broner (30-1, 22 KOs) is rumored as a possibility for June 20th, according to RingTV.

The Broner-Porter fight could possibly take place on Premier Boxing Champions. This would be a significant fight for both guys because neither has taken on a serious test since they suffered setbacks in defeats in the past year or two.

This would be a big test for both Broner and Porter if the fight takes place because both guys have had easy recently in facing weaker opposition. Broner needs a tough test like Porter so that he can prove that he belongs in the 140-147 pound divisions. Right now it’s hard to say how well Broner would do against a talented light welterweight like Lamont Peterson, Terence Crawford, Danny Garcia or Lucas Matthysse.

Porter fights at welterweight, so Broner will either need to move up to 147 again or he’ll need to face him at a catch-weight. It’s unlikely that Porter would be willing to drain down to 140 to take the Broner fight unless the money was really good. The 5’7” Porter has fought at junior middleweight during the early part of his career. After he moved down to 147, Porter has looked great with the exception of his fight against Kell Brook.

Broner, 25, has won his last three fights since his loss to Marcos Maidana in 2013. Broner didn’t have the size or the power to compete with the larger Maidana in that fight. However, Broner has bounced back with victories over Carlos Molina, Emmanuel Taylor and John Molina Jr.

Porter lost his IBF welterweight title last August to Kell Brook in a 12 round majority decision defeat. Since then, Porter has come back with a 5th round stoppage win over Erick Bone last April.

If Broner looks as good as he did in his fight against Molina, he could get a victory over Porter. However, Broner won’t be able to count on Porter fighting as passively as Molina did because that’s not the way Porter fights. He’s a guy that crowds his opponents and fights in close much like Maidana. Broner could find it a very tough fight against Porter unless he uses movement, and is able to deal with him on the inside. Broner won’t be able to take breaks against Porter by hanging on the ropes and just covering up. If Broner fights like that, he’s going to get outworked by Porter.
