harrisonBy Jim Dower: Undefeated junior middleweight knockout artist Tony Harrison (21-0, 18 KOs) picked up his 18th knockout last Friday night in defeating 36-year-old Pablo Munguia (20-7, 11 KOs) by a 3rd round stoppage victory in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Mohegan Sun Casino, in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA.

The 6’1” Harrison knocked the much shorter 5’7” Munguia down with a right to the head late in the 2nd round. Munguia barely made it out of the round. At the start of the 3rd round, Harrison flurried on a still badly hurt Munguia until the referee Arthur Mercante Jr. shoved the 24-year-old Harrison out of the way and stopped the fight before he had a chance to finish off Munguia.

The official time of the stoppage was 0:11 of the 3rd round.

Harrison was able to tee off on Munguia with hard right hands all night long. Munguia showed a good chin in taking some shots that would have likely knocked out a lesser fighter. However, Munguia was still able to land a lot of shots in the first two rounds of action. His only problem was he didn’t have the power to worry Harrison. He was mostly slapping with his punches, and he looked flabby and out of shape.

“I’m looking for whoever [adviser] Al Haymon puts in with me,” Harrison said after the fight via Fight News. “I’m from Detroit. I’ve never said ‘no’ to an opponent I was offered, which says a lot about me. We have a lot of heart in Detroit. I’m ready for a big fight. I got him with a step-back overhand right. I wish they had let it go a little longer. I wanted to finish him off, but the bell went off.”

It’s time that Harrison start facing better opposition because his career is still in a holding pattern with him facing weak opposition each time he fights. He should have already been fighting better guys at this point in his career, and it’s slowing things down for the 6’1″ fighter. His handlers are going to have to find out sooner or later whether he has the talent to compete against the best. At 160, Harrison probably stands no chance against Gennady Golovkin, but he’d possibly do well against many of the contenders in that division.

In other boxing action on the card, 25-year-old super featherweight Ryan Kielczewski (22-1, 6 KOs) tasted defeat for the first time in getting outworked by Danny Aquino (17-2, 10 KOs) in losing an 8 round split decision. The judges’ scores were 78-74 for Kielczewski, and 78-74 and 78-74 for Aquino.

It was a pretty clear win for Aquino. It’s unclear what the judge was looking at who scored the fight to Kielczewski. Aquino landed the harder shots all fight long, and he was also the busier guy of the two. Kielczewski didn’t show any power in his shots, and he just looked like he was afraid to mix it up the way he needed to if he wanted to get the victory.

Lightweight Tevin Farmer (19-4-1, 4 KOs) defeated the hard hitting Angel Luna (10-1-1, 6 KOs) by an eight round unanimous decision. The final scores were 80-72, 79-73 and 80-72. Luna put constant pressure on the taller Farmer, but he was getting picked off a lot while coming forward. That made his job that much harder.
