Pacquiao says he’ll talk to Mayweather about a rematch after the fight

1-35By Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) hasn’t yet faced Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) yet, but already Pacquiao is talking about possibly having a talk with Mayweather after the fight about a potential rematch between them.

It’s something that would make sense for both of them regardless of how one-sided the fight turns out to be. The two fighters can still make a lot more money facing each other than they could if they were to fight other opponents. That’s the positive thing about it.

It doesn’t matter if Mayweather totally schools Pacquiao in a one-sided fight, boxing fans will still like to see a rematch in high enough numbers for it to be a fight worth making. Of course, the number of fans willing to purchase the fight on pay-per-view likely won’t be as high as they were the first time around if the fight turns out to be one-sided, but it’s still a fight that would dwarf the numbers that either of them would receiver if they faced other opponents.

“I don’t know it’s hard to say,” Pacquiao said via the media about a second fight with Mayweather. “Maybe after the fight we become best of friends and we discuss another possible fight. We know that the fans have been waiting for this fight a long time ago, almost five six years. This fight, I just want to send this message to him, nothing personal, we are just doing our job.”

Getting Mayweather to agree to a second fight will largely depend on how things go the first time around. If Mayweather wins the fight on May 2nd, then I can see him wanting to take a second fight against Pacquiao in September on the Mexican holiday in that month. But if Mayweather loses the fight, it’s debatable whether he’ll agree to a second fight against Pacquiao.

The only way I see Mayweather agreeing to a second fight against him is if he believes that he can improve on what he did wrong the first time around. It would be kind of like the do over that he did with Marcos Maidana when he fought him a second time after not doing so well the first time around in edging him by a close 12 round decision.

If Pacquiao loses the fight in a one-sided manner, then he’s going to need to deal with having to make his own decision about whether it worth it to him to try and get a second fight with Mayweather.

If Pacquiao doesn’t believe in his heart that he can win a rematch against Mayweather, then he might choose not to face him a second time. If he does face him under those conditions then you would have to think that he’s doing it just for the sake of money rather than the thought of avenging the loss.

Mayweather usually doesn’t like to take rematches so it’s possible that he won’t bother.

“After the fight, if I could talk to him then I want to share the gospel of God, share with him why we need God. I just want to share that we need to be saved,” Pacquiao said.

Mayweather might be up for a discussion on religion with Pacquiao as long as he’s not being lectured by him, and as long as Pacquiao isn’t trying to rub it in if he wins the fight. Mayweather is a kind person, and he’ll likely not have a problem with having a brief discussion with Pacquiao. The only thing that would be potentially negative about it is if Pacquiao started to talk to the media about everything they talked about during their meeting.
