Pacquiao: I didn’t want 60-40 split but did it for the fans

Mayweather vs Pacquiao SUPERFIGHTBy Raj Parmar: As Manny Pacquiao goes through his final preparations for his historic showdown with boxing’s biggest attraction in Floyd Mayweather Jr, he has revealed that he is not totally satisfied with the economic split between the two fighters.

Mayweather will be taking 60% of the event’s profits while Pacquiao will bring home 40%, which Manny maintains is not a fair split and something he only agreed to in order to make the fight that fans have waited 5-6 years to see finally happen.

“If my concern is myself alone, I don’t (think of) the fans, then the fight, it’s hard to make happen,” Pacquiao explained during his recent media day workout, “Because of course, I don’t want to take 60-40, a disadvantage and everything. I agreed with that for the sake of the fans. I agreed to make the fight happen.”

Some estimates have indicated that Floyd stands to make around $140-$180 million for the fight and Manny around $80-$120 million. It was not too long before the fight was signed that Mayweather had indicated he would not offer more than $40 million to Manny, however the “Pacman” is now making double to triple that amount instead which is no doubt a huge plus for him.

Although both men will be earning more money in one single fight than they possibly ever imagined they would, Manny seems to feel disrespected by only being assigned 40%. While this fight was a 50-50 split type of fight a few years ago when both men were dominating the welterweight scene, Manny has since suffered a knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez while Mayweather has remained undefeated with his pay per view numbers well ahead of Pacquiao’s.

Therefore a strong case can be made that Floyd deserved a bigger share of the pie, however Manny feels disrespected by the 20% disparity between his and Floyd’s split. With many members of team Pacquiao stating that the eight division champion is looking as motivated and fierce as ever in training camp, Manny is likely fueled on by the disrespect he feels Floyd has shown him and will be carrying this resentment with him when he steps into the ring on May 2.
