By Raj Parmar: It appears that pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr is suffering some wear and tear as he makes a final push towards getting prepared for arguably his toughest foe to date in Manny Pacquiao. Reports are suggesting that Floyd’s hands are very sensitive at the moment and his lip has been split open.

“Floyd Mayweather has a split lip and injured hands. I know because I saw them,” David Mayo stated in a column on mlive.com, “He sparred through the surely excruciating pain of superficial skin marks on his knuckles. He sparred with the split lip.”

Mayo has been covering Mayweather’s career for a long time and is adamant that Floyd is working hard through his injuries to get ready for Pacquiao, and the bumps and bruises will in no way will delay the fight or effect the outcome.

So let me confirm that Mayweather indeed has been coping with hand injuries. He has some skin marks on his knuckles. They require antiseptic. He even sometimes blows on them to relieve the stinging after the medication is applied, lest anyone think it impossible to hurt boxing’s pound-for-pound king,” Mayo explained, “Nothing is structurally wrong with Mayweather’s hands. Nothing about his split lip will alter his sparring schedule to any meaningful extent.”

Floyd has had a history of hand issues in his career and he goes to the extent of using special foamed gloves that further protect his hands at the expense of limiting his punching power. There is no doubt that Floyd and Manny both are pushing themselves to their extreme limits in training as this is the biggest fight in both of their careers. As they put their bodies through such a tough grind while in their late 30’s, it is understandable for why there are aches and pains.

These last couple of weeks in training camp before the big day on May 2 is crucial as the work put during this time will likely will be the deciding factor in how well the fighter will perform on fight night. Therefore Floyd will continue to brush off the pain as much possible as he looks to peak his condition before both boxers start tapering down their training in the coming weeks.
