Mayweather will beat Pacquiao, says Danny Garcia

floyd4556By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia expects Floyd Mayweather Jr to top Manny Pacquiao next month in their fight on May 2nd. Garcia definitely sees Mayweather winning the fight, but he thinks it won’t be an easy fight for Floyd. Garcia is considered to be the best fighter in the 140 pound division, and he has high hopes of facing Mayweather and Pacquiao after two more fights.

Whether that will happen will largely be determined on how well Danny goes in his next couple of fights. He needs a couple of big names and he needs to impress while beating them.

“I believe he’ll [Mayweather] win, but it’ll be a very competitive fight,” Garcia said via RingTV.com.

I’m not so sure that the fight will be competitive at all. Mayweather does not get hit with head shots, not unless he’s giving a handicap like he did against Marcos Maidana in his first fight with him in 2014, and in his fight against Miguel Cotto. If Mayweather takes it easy on Pacquiao by standing perfectly still so that he can land his shots, then I can see Pacquiao landing some punches, but that’s pretty much it. If Mayweather goes into his defensive mode and decides he doesn’t want to get hit, Pacquiao is going to be hitting air all night long.

When Mayweather doesn’t want to get hit, you’re not going to hit him. It’s plane as that. There’s probably no one in the 140 to 160 pound divisions that can lay a glove on Mayweather if he decides he’s going to fight in his defensive mode, least of all a fighter who is giving up six inches in reach like Pacquiao.

It’s been a long time since Mayweather fought someone where he had six inches in reach over them. He doesn’t lose to guys that he has a long reach advantage over. Pacquiao is not good at throwing long punches, and even if he was, he wouldn’t have the reach to connect with his shots against a mobile version of Mayweather. So instead of Pacquiao being able to connect with his shots, it’s going to be Mayweather who will be landing his punches in this fight and dominating the action from start to finish.

The competitive fight that Garcia sees in his mind has to be one where Mayweather’s feet are literally stuck in glue with him making a conscious decision not to move his feet, and not to make Pacquiao chase him. Yes, if Mayweather fights like that, Pacquiao will have a chance to land his shots. But if Mayweather is going to fight like that, it’s going to look like he’s carrying the Filipino star instead of him wanting to clown him and make it easy. I’m not sure that boxing fans would be too pleased to see Mayweather fighting like that because some of them may think that Mayweather is taking it easy on Pacquiao. Who wants to see a fight where one guy is carrying his shorter opponent to make the fight competitive?
