Mayweather Sr: I’d be shocked if Floyd Jr. lost to Pacquiao

mayweather sr2By Chris Williams: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he’d be totally shocked if his son Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) were to lose to Filipino star Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) in their big money bout next month. Floyd Sr. just can’t wrap his head around the idea of son Mayweather Jr losing to a fighter like Pacquiao because he simply sees Pacquiao as a clear level below him.

It’s not that Floyd Sr. doesn’t see the 36-year-old Pacquiao as a good fighter. He definitely thinks Pacquiao is a good solid little fighter, but he just doesn’t see Pacquiao as having the intelligence, size or the power to get the job done against a talented fighter like Mayweather Jr.

I think a lot of boxing fans would agree to Floyd Sr. on that belief because Pacquiao has failed so many times against guys in the past there were nowhere close to Mayweather in the talent department. We saw that with Pacquiao arguably losing all four fights against Juan Manuel Marquez, a fighter that Mayweather totally out-boxed in 2009.

“I’m gonna be honest with you, that would be a big,” Floyd Sr. said via Mlive.com in discussing how he would receive a Mayweather loss to Pacquiao. “I have to say it would shock the (expletive) out of me. It would shock the hell out of me. But you’ve still got to live on, man. I’m not going to hide because it happened. But better yet, to be honest, I’m just saying that it’s God will, you know? I think that it’ll be all right.”

It’s obviously a scenario that Floyd Sr. wants to stew on too much because he’s someone who doesn’t think too much about his son Mayweather Jr. losing to anyone in the sport. Mayweather has been too busy winning and looking good. While there is a possibility that Mayweather could wind up losing to the Filipino star on May 2nd, it’s not something that is likely given the two fighter’s history.

To be sure, it would be big news if Mayweather were to lose to Pacquiao, but it’s not something that will likely happen. Even the odds-makers realize that it’s just not probable that Mayweather will lose this fight. That’s why they have Mayweather as the favorite to win the fight, and those odds aren’t likely to change before the fight, especially with the news that Pacquiao is struggling in his sparring with his sparring partners.

There’s also the stuff that has surfaced recently about Pacquiao having cramping problems with his legs. When you hear stuff like that, it makes it very difficult to give Pacquiao a chance at winning this fight. It was thought that the cramping problems were over with after Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach switched out strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza. But interestingly enough the cramping problems have resurfaced just when Pacquiao needs to be 100 percent for the fight. It’s logical to assume that if Pacquiao is cramping up in training, he’s likely to cramp up in the heat of the battle with Mayweather.

One wonders how Pacquiao, his trainer Freddie Roach and promoter Bob Arum would take a loss to Mayweather. If it’s a really one-sided fight with Mayweather totally clowning Pacquiao for 12 rounds or knocking him out, it could be a real disaster for Pacquiao’s career. It’s not like this is the first time that Pacquiao lost a fight, so it would be a much bigger deal for Pacquiao to lose right now to Mayweather than vice versa.

Mayweather can certainly afford a loss right now and still not lose a many boxing fans, if any. I don’t think you can say the same thing for Pacquiao. He had that recent loss to Marquez, and all those controversial wins over him. In the minds of many boxing fans, Marquez won all four of the fights with Pacquiao but was ripped off three times.

I don’t think Pacquiao could handle yet another loss on top of all those defeats. If you’re asking fans to pay to see Pacquiao fight, it’s a very big deal if he gets clowned by Mayweather in a one-sided loss. How do you continue to ask boxing fans to pay $75 a pop to see Pacquiao fight after he takes a lopsided loss to Mayweather? I can see Pacquiao’s future PPV buys dropping down to the 300,000 level and staying there.
