By Dan Ambrose: On May 2nd, boxing fans will get a chance at seeing the huge difference between the styles and likely the intelligence of the two superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) and Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) when the two of them trade blows for the first time in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather has a lot of respect for Pacquiao and his boxing skills and power. But Mayweather also sees a lot of wasted movement and aimless moves that Pacquiao makes. He feels that is reckless of Pacquiao, because he puts himself in position where he had to put faith in his ability to take his opponent’s best shots each time he goes on the attack mode.

In Pacquiao’s knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012, Pacquiao paid for his reckless style of fighting.

While there’s no rematch clause in their contract for this fight, you can bet that they’ll be back in the ring to face each other a second time in September of this year. There’s too much money on the line for them not to face each other at least twice, possibly three times depending on how close their May 2nd fight turns out to be.

floyd6Mayweather is very careful with the shots that he throws. You can see him thinking constantly before he commits to a punch. He’s never throwing silly shots that leave himself open, and he doesn’t’ open up with a lot of combinations that would otherwise put him in dangerous of getting countered.

Pacquiao completely different with the way he fights. He moves constantly and is always hopping around on his feet even he doesn’t need to. Pacquiao uses a lot of in and out movement to keep from getting hit. However, he winds up getting nailed frequently due to his habit of throwing a lot of combinations rather than him throwing one or two shots at a time.

“He’s kind of reckless, his moves are not thought about… Good speed,” Mayweather said via the examiner.com. “Pacquiao is a solid competitor and he’s going to push me to be my very best.”

Pacquiao probably won’ do much to change his fighting style for this fight, because Mayweather doesn’t have the punching power to make Pacquiao pay for his reckless style of fighting like a stronger puncher would. Mayweather has bene working on his punching power with the help of former Pacquiao strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, but it’s not likely that Mayweather’s punching power will be increased enough for him to knock Pacquiao out like Marquez did.

“I think he [Pacquiao] makes a lot of mistakes that Floyd can take advantage of,” Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said. “We might see a knockout in this fight.”

Ellerbe foresees Pacquiao making a big mistake that will lead to him getting hurt by one of Mayweather’s perfectly timed shots to the head while Pacquiao is rushing in. Mayweather does have the timing on his shots to catch Pacquiao when he least expects it while he’s on the attack. This is the mistakes that Ellerbe and Mayweather are talking about. If Pacquiao attacks wildly without thought, he could find himself getting caught with a shot that he’s not expecting. That punch may be enough for Mayweather to score a knockout.
