Mayweather-Pacquiao $10 weigh-in tickets go on sale today

pacBy Chris Williams: For boxing fans who were unable to purchase any of the 1,000 tickets that were put on sale to the general public last Thursday, the fans can now purchase tickets to see the May 1st Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Manny Pacquiao weigh-in at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The tickets go for $10. They go on sale officially at 3PM ET today, Friday.

There is a limit of 10 per person, which obviously was done to prevent scalpers from purchasing a ton of tickets at once and then marking up the price to a ridiculous amount. As it is it’s difficult to imagine having to pay to see a weigh-in because there’s nothing going on other than the fighters briefly weighing in and then doing a stare down.

The undercard fights aren’t interesting in the minds of a lot of boxing fans, so many of the fans would be merely purchasing the weigh-in tickets in order to see Mayweather and Pacquiao.

For the fans interested in purchasing the Mayweather-Pacquiao weigh-in tickets, they can purchase them through the MGM Resorts box office.

According to ESPN, the weigh-ins are supposed to be free in the state of Nevada, but the promoters were able to get an exception in this case because they didn’t want a lot of boxing fans camping out in front of the MGM Grand in order to see the weigh-in. With the tickets being purchased ahead of time, the large crowds will likely be avoided.

It’ll be interesting to see how many fans show up to see the weigh-in.
The money for the weigh-in will be given to charity and to the security staff that will control the crowds.

“The charge of $10 for the weigh-in will benefit two great charities,” Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum said via ESPN.com. “All proceeds will go right to them. This is a win-win situation for all.”

Hopefully this isn’t the beginning of a future thing where all weigh-ins cost money to boxing fans. If they did it to avoid large crowds camping out to get into the weigh-in, we could see that as an excuse to sell tickets to weigh-ins in the future. In things like this once a revenue stream is started for something that was once a free thing, it just continues in that direction. Believe it or not, Stanford University didn’t require a tuition when it first opened up, but that all changed in 1920 and it’s now one of the most expensive private schools in the nation.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight shapes up to be a classic example of a pure boxer facing reckless slugger. Fans will get to see how a boxer deals with a slugger who moves constantly even when it’s not necessary. Mayweather hasn’t given away his fight strategy for this fight, but it’s possible we could see a little bit of everything from him. He’s going to likely slug and box depending on what Pacquiao brings to the table. This fight could turn out to be a real sick mismatch like the Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight turned out being in 2009. Before that fight many boxing fans thought Marquez had a good chance of beating Mayweather, but as soon as the bell rang in the 1st round it was immediately clear that Marquez didn’t belong in the same ring with Mayweather. We could see Pacquiao turned into Marquez with hi getting a boxing lesson. If Pacquiao hasn’t cleaned up his reckless style of fighting by May 2nd, we could even see him getting knocked out because his primitive fighting style is going to leave him vulnerable to Mayweathers perfectly timed shots.
