Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao: When you just want to watch a good or great bout

Manny PacquiaoBy Shaun La: As the mega-bout (fight night is the 2nd of May!) between Floyd Mayweather Jr. & Manny Pacquiao appears to be closing in as the month of April dwindles down, I have yet to select a boxer who I think will come out as the winner. My mind has played various scenes and outcomes for both boxers.

At one point in time, I saw Manny coming and earning the win by being the aggressor and being a bolt of pressure that makes Floyd Jr. look like he is unaware of what is coming from Manny’s speed, footwork and combos.

Then, my mind would see Floyd Jr. being safe & boxing smart with a slickness that has him counter-punching along with waiting until the last 20 seconds to throw some punches to leave a lasting impression on the official ringside judges (like Sugar Ray Leonard did against Marvin Hagler), coming away with the scorecards being in his favor for the win.

Above all else, if I had to pick between seeing a good/great fight or an individual winner. I would select seeing a good/great fight, and I could not care less who come out the winner if this happens to be a bout that keeps me on the edge of my seat, while both boxers try to pull out the win by giving it their all.

I won’t say that this bout need to be like an Ali vs. Foreman or Hagler vs. Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Hagler, Gatti vs. Ward (the 1st bout), Chavez vs. Taylor, Corrales vs. Freitas or any other boxing classic. I will say that this bout needs to find its own position in the legacy of good or great boxing bouts. Of course, it could be a bout that comes out to be a dud. However, I am hopeful that this bout is a display of boxing courage, confidence from both boxers, powerful strength & conditioning that is linked to faithful gym training; especially, when it comes to this great sport of boxing, where thinking how to box tends to show that boxing is 90% mental and 10% physical.

Here are my ten reasons why I want you to be hopeful as well, when it comes to having the chance to see this bout come thru after years and years of being excited then relaxed after figuring out that the politics in this particular sport taught us that we might hear the best “No we not going fight each other, because” instead of hearing “the best will be fighting the best”. Well, as the days & nights goes by, we as boxing fans are understanding that the “Yes” on both sides is the wake-up call that this bout is really going to happen. Let us hope that this fight is full of boxing.

You should watch this bout, because:

10: The entertainment factor and with this kind of possibility, anything could happen, the good, the great or anything in between.

9: You would be a spectator to a moment in sport’s history. You can tell the future generation, “I watched this fight!”

8: If you are a fan of either boxer, this is your time to promote, argue, debate and support your favorite boxer without sounding crazy.

7: If you are a new fan to boxing and you don’t know anything about this sport, this is a great bout to start off with, come jump in!

6: To see two boxers who earned this chance to make hundreds of millions, proof that dedication to a sport does pay off.

5: Being that this pay-per-view will cost close to $ 100.00, you could make it a great fight party where guests pitch in to pay help cover this special order.

4: You really get to see two dissimilar boxing styles clash. Orthodox vs. Southpaw. Defensive boxer vs. Offensive boxer.

3: Floyd Jr. comes from a family of fighters, who are his trainers and Manny’s trainer is a former boxer. This is a fight from the fighter’s corners to the middle of the ring.

2: Pull out a sheet of paper with a pencil and score the bout yourself, become a participant, an unofficial judge.

1: The only way for the dust to settle in order to see who is Pound for Pound the Greatest right now, is to have this bout!

Enjoy boxing.
