Mayweather Jr has the fastest hands in boxing, says Floyd Sr

floyd002By Chris Williams: While a lot of boxing fans feel that possibly Amir Khan or Manny Pacquiao have the fastest hands in the sport today, trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. firmly believes that the fastest hands in the sport go to his son WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0, 26 KOs).

Floyd Sr. jokingly says he would have the fastest hands in boxing if he were a little younger, but right now that title goes to Mayweather Jr.

“If I was a couple years younger, I would be the fastest but I guess right now we’ll let little Floyd have that,” Floyd Sr. said via esnewsreporting.com. “I can’t really say about no best chin because to me, I don’t ever really look at nothing about nobody taking punches because that ain’t nothing that I like.”

Floyd Sr. prides himself at training his fighters to avoid taking punishment rather than letting them get hit a lot. He doesn’t see it as a badge of honor for fighters to brag about their ability to take a huge shot or an assortment of shots.

Mayweather may or may not be faster than Pacquiao and Khan, but he is definitely more accurate than the two of them. He also has better timing on his shots. Khan just throws wild shots all over the place with many of them missing badly. He’s fast with his hands, but he misses so much that it defeats the whole purpose of him having fast hands.

Pacquiao is kind of in the same boat as Khan is in terms of his accuracy. He’s fast with his hands, but he misses a lot with his shots and that kind of spoils things for him. It doesn’t help Pacquiao to have fast hands when he’s all over the place with his shots.

Speed really doesn’t matter if you don’t have good accuracy. It also doesn’t help if it causes you to get hit a lot. In the case of Khan and Pacquiao, they throw a lot of wild flurries that leave them both open for getting countered by their opponents. That’s why we’ve seen Pacquiao and Khan get knocked out in the past. You haven’t seen Mayweather getting knocked out because he’s throwing mainly one punch at a time, and not leaving himself open to getting countered by his opponents.

Mayweather isn’t going to change his fighting style for the Pacquiao fight. Mayweather will likely continue to fight in a careful manner, staying out of the way of his opponent’s shots.

With Pacquiao, I think it’s safe to say that he’s going to fight the way he does now for the remainder of his pro career. He’s not going to all of a sudden turn into a careful pot shot artist like Mayweather because Pacquiao doesn’t have the arm length to fight like that, and he doesn’t have the right temperament to fight in that manner. In other words, Pacquiao likes to exchange with his opponents. He wants to rush them and land flurries of shots. Yes, it’s entertaining, but it also leads to Pacquiao getting hit a lot.
