Pacquiao Blog Part II: Manny, how important was your meeting with Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the Miami Heat game in this fight becoming a reality?

“I thought it was a significant step because it showed me he understood the importance of making the fight, publicly and privately. But even before our meeting at the Miami Heat game and after the game, I was confident this fight would happen. I prayed for this fight to happen and the Lord delivered him to me.

“I was an underdog in the negotiations for this fight. I have been the underdog in the wagering on this fight. I am the underdog to win the fight by the media who are covering it. The odds that this fight would happen, five years after our first negotiation, was considered a long shot. And I love it. I love it all. I love being the underdog because every time I have been the underdog in a fight I have won.

De La Hoya, Barerra and Ledwaba were all favored to destroy me. Being the underdog inspired me in training.  Winning those fights gave hope and inspiration to those who needed it.  It gave proof that someone like me, born in poverty, who came from the dirt, can achieve success against all odds with hard work and prayer.  Being an underdog has always spurred me on to greater heights.

“It is time for Floyd to lose. When I enter the ring on May 2 it will be no different than when David faced Goliath.”

Freddie Roach Blog Part 2: Monday, April 13

In what ways has Floyd Mayweather Jr. declined in recent years?

“Floyd’s legs are betraying him. You can see that in his recent fights. He has never wanted to engage because that is not his style. But recently he has been forced to because he no longer can be on his toes for a full three minutes per round. He takes rests on the ropes and fights flatfooted more often. He is 38, and you can only put off Father Time for so long.

“Floyd is still an incredible athlete but he is not the same fighter he used to be and he knows that. He says he wants to give the fans more action by engaging more but he is trying to cover up the real reason his fighting style has changed — his legs are beginning to betray him. And trust me, that is in his head and so is the fact that Manny’s legs are still in their prime. It’s a big disadvantage – mentally and physically – to give that up to an opponent before you meet in the ring. Floyd can run all he wants in training camp. It’s not going to help.

“A big deal has been made about Manny not having a knockout since 2009. But Floyd has only had one KO victory in the same period – against a guy whose arms were at his side.

“I guarantee you Floyd lays awake at night knowing his boxing day of reckoning is fast approaching. Knowing that on May 2 he will be 47-1.”
