Khan’s father says to Brook’s promoter Hearn: Anymore disrespecting us and it’s over

khan777By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan’s father, Shah Khan, says that IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport talked himself out of a big fight against Khan by his trash talking about Khan. Shah says they would have taken the fight with Brook if Hearn has been respectful and calm.

But with the way he’s badgered Khan constantly in the media, Shah says they’re tempted never to face Brook if Hearn keep it up like this. Shah points out how British welterweight Junior Witter trash talked Ricky Hatton many years ago trying to get a fight against him.

It didn’t work. Instead of it making Hatton want to fight him, it hardened Hatton’s solve not to want anything to do with Witter. As such, Hatton retired a very wealthy man and Witter never received a big payday fight against him.

It would be a pity if Brook never gets the payday fight against Khan, because without that fight, I think it’s quite possible that Brook may never get a huge money fight during his career. I seriously doubt that welterweight superstars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will ever bother facing Brook.

It’s not that he’s not a decent fighter, because he’s got good skills and he seems to be right around the level of Shawn Porter in of ability. But the reality is that Brook isn’t well-known in the United States, and he’s not likely to build up a fan base given the kind of opposition that Hearn is matching him up against. He faced Jo Jo Dan in his last fight on March 28th in Sheffield in the UK. In Brook’s next fight, he’ll be facing #5 IBF Frankie Gavin on May 30th in London, UK.

Those fights aren’t going to do anything for Brook in terms of building a fan base for him in the U.S, and the fights aren’t staged in the right place for him to win over America fans. If you want to become a big enough name to fight the likes of Mayweather and Pacquiao, then you’ve got to fight the top level opposition in the United States.

Granted, Dan was ranked #1 by the IBF and Gavin is rated #5, but in those cases you can make a good argument that those fighters have/had inflated rankings by the International Boxing Federation. I mean, I definitely didn’t see Jo Jo Dan as a No.1 contender, someone worthy to be ranked above Tim Bradley, Amir Khan, Shawn Porter, Diego Chaves, Sadam Ali, Devon Alexander and Fredrick Lawson. But for some reason the IBF had Dan ranked above all those fighters.

In the case of Gavin, he’s ranked by the IBF ahead of Chaves, Porter, Alexander, Sadam Ali, and Fredrick Lawson. I think that’s a Mickey Mouse ranking by the IBF. Brook gets cover by fighting Gavin and Dan due to their high rankings, but he shouldn’t be fighting guys based on rankings, but rather on their actual talent.

“Kell could have had his chance against Amir right now if Eddie Hearn had toned it down,” Shah Khan said via espn.co.uk. “But instead of being patient he’s been so disrespectful. If he carries on like that the Brook fight will not take place. “Amir’s told Kell he will be happy to box him in the next year but Eddie’s jeopardizing that. He carries on calling us out and insulting us. Any more of that and it will be all over.”

Well, there it is. Shah letting Hearn and Brook know that they could be put on the permanent ignore list by Shah and Khan if they keep flapping their gums in complaining about being ignored by Khan. Do I think that Shah’s message to Hearn and Brook will cause them to tone down their bellyaching? Nope. I think will continue to complain and this in turn will likely lead to Brook never getting the Khan fight. After a while it’ll be academic once Brook faces a high quality guy like Keith Thurman and he takes a loss. I don’t know if Hearn will ever let Brook take a fight against Thgurman, but if he does make the mistake of making that fight, then I see Thurman knocking Brook out fairly fast.
