Wimar Patino (Boxing’s Finest) Welcome to another edition of Boxing News with highlights and a quick review of the fights that took place on April 11th 2015. As you know Errol Spence Jr fought on the untelevised portion of the PBC undercards. He scored an impressive 4th round TKO of Samuel Vargas leaving Vargas with a record of 20-2-1 while Spence Jr. advances his own record to 16-0 with 13 KO’s.

Andy Lee vs Peter Quillin took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY and was the undercard to the main event. This fight saw both fighters throwing bombs one punch at a time. It seemed like they were content with trying to counter the other or go for one big punch and get out the way. Peter Quillin scored 2 knockdowns, but on the 2nd knock down he clearly stepped on Andy Lee’s foot. Andy Lee tried to stay on the outside for the most part and box his way to a decision while throwing a big punch every chance he had. They both seemed a little gun shy in the sense that neither wanted to throw too many combo’s leaving the fight in the hands of the judges. At the end of the day it was a tough fight to score and both men walked out with a split draw.

Danny Garcia vs Lamont Peterson was the main event and has the most controversy surrounding it. Lamont Peterson seemed to want to keep the fight on the outside and box cautiously costing him the majority of the first half of the fight. Danny Garcia would land some hooks and body shots sporadically throughout the fight making it rather tough to score. Lamont Peterson was the far more accurate puncher but he wasn’t as busy as Danny Garcia was at the start nor as aggressive. As the fight progressed Lamont Peterson started finding his groove and began to really frustrate and tire Danny Garcia. Eventually turning it up from the 8th round on and doing a number on Danny Garcia’s face as he partly exposed some of Garcia’s flaws and weaknesses. Either way it was a close fight and the judges had it as a majority decision favoring Danny Garcia. I personally at first glance had it 115-113 for Peterson, but I’d have to go back and see the fight again to make a better assessment on who I believed won the fight.

With Errol Spence Jr progressing his career as he looks to move on to bigger fights and the split draw between undefeated Peter Quillin and Andy Lee, and the somewhat controversial majority decision between Danny Garcia vs Lamont Peterson there is lots to talk about. Now a day removed from the events as some of you I imagine went back to re-score the fight and get a second opinion tell us who you thought won these fights and Where do these men go with their careers from this point on?
