Broner picking Mayweather by stoppage over Pacquiao

floyd94By Chris Williams: This Saturday night is going to be the moment of truth for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in their clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach have been talking about having the perfect game plan to defeat Mayweather on May 2nd, and now boxing fans get to see if their perfect plan was for real or just wishful thinking.

One person who thinks Pacquiao is kidding himself is former three division world champion Adrien Broner. He sees Mayweather winning the fight all the way. In fact, Broner says he’s betting $10K on Mayweather stopping the 36-year-old Filipino fighter inside the distance by the 8th round.

The reason why Broner sees Mayweather scoring a stoppage is because of all the mistakes that Pacquiao makes in his fights. Broner sees a lot of mistakes from Pacquiao, and he doesn’t see any improvement in his game. He hears how they’re working on different things in the gym, but each time Pacquiao fights, he’s using the same game plan that he’s always using. There is nothing different. He has one style and that’s all there ever is from him.

“One sided. I think he [Mayweather] can stop him. I’m betting on a stoppage,” Broner said via Fighthype. I’ll probably put like $25 to $50,000 on the fight, but I’m going to put at least, you know, $10,000 on the stoppage. I’d say about eighth round. I think he’s good to go. I see the see the same Manny Pacquiao. They’re saying they’re working on different things in the gym, but every time he fights, he does the same thing. He makes the same mistakes,” Broner said.

It’s hard to disagree with a man fighter like Broner. He seems to have studied Pacquiao much like an opposing trainer would to a fighter that is getting ready to face his guy. I think Broner is dead on correct about Pacquiao being the same fighter each fight. His trainer Freddie Roach is constantly yacking about how he and Pacquiao are working on different game plans for such and such fighter, but each time Pacquiao fights, he uses the same style.

As far as I can tell, there’s nothing different from Pacquiao’s fights. If Roach is giving Pacquiao different game plans then he’s not applying them. That’s on Roach for not putting some heat under Pacquiao’s backside to get him to stay on course with whatever game plans that he’s dreaming up for him.

In the past it really didn’t matter that Pacquiao was fighting the same each time and making the same mistakes, because his promoter Bob Arum was frequently putting him in with flawed fighters that he could beat even with poor technique. But against Mayweather, Pacquiao is going to need to fight smart and he’s going to need to come up with a different fighting style than the tired one that he’s been doing before he ever started training with Roach. Jumping in and jumping out won’t work against a good fighter like Mayweather, and it could very well lead to Pacquiao getting knocked out early in the fight like Broner is betting on.
