wladimir4311By Gerardo Granados: Back in 1989 the Berlin wall fall and as a domino the Soviet Union came to an end, it also came to an end the politics that prevented many brave and skillful fighters to join the ranks of prize fighting, fortunately for us fight fans now a days we can see how many hungry lions have come out from the Iron Curtain to compete and to rule supreme as boxing champions.

It is no secret that you will find many fighters who have succeeded coming from very humble origins.

The reader can name a lot of names of talented courageous fighters from past and present days who have proved to be hungry for fame and glory.

I bet 1/10 that you will not find a great fighter who was born in a golden crib, no son of a Senator or a rich Banker will ever dare to become a prize fighter to withstand the punishment and sacrifice to be able to succeed.

Days ago a friend asked about my favorites fighters, the most exciting to watch, so I listed Gennady Golovkin, Ruslan Provodnikov, Sergey Kovalev and Carl Froch. Among the first three fighters you can find disciplined, mentally focus hungry lions who are determined to do anything to achieve their dreams, which can’t be shared with many spoiled big names that I prefer not to mention.
You can add the name of other boxers who came from former soviet countries: Dennis Lebedev, Grigory Drozd, Vasyl Lomachenko, Evgeny Gradovich, Ruslan Chagaev and Wladimir Klitschko.

What would it be like if these fine sons of boxing were not around? I can assure you that the professional boxing landscape would be different not only for the belt holders but also because we the fight fans would be missing the pleasure to see hungry lions battling for supremacy and not just for the opportunity to hand pick tailor made opponents that they can defeat.

Competition improves all activities and professional boxing is no exception. I would like to see more fighters coming out of Africa and Pacific Asia, of course to develop boxing in those areas is not so easy but it is a long time since Azumah Nelson climbed into the ring, also Muay Thai is big in Pacific Asia but there are not many Boxing World Champions out of that geographic zone.

Maybe Kokou and Túmatauenga will hear me and they will sent more warriors into the ring.

Can you imagine what would it be like if the former soviet boxers were not around?
