Weights: Braehmer 173.3, Krasniqi 173.9

By Scott Gilfoid: Earlier Today, WBA light heavyweight title holder Juergen Braehmer (45-2, 33 KOs) successfully weighed in on Friday for his title defense against Robin Krasniqi (43-3, 16 KOs) this Saturday night at then Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

Braehmer, 34, weighed in at 173.3 pounds. Krasniqi came in at 173.9lbs.

For Braehmer this is yet another easy defense against a very, very beatable challenger. However, it’s not his fault that he selected Krasniqi, as the World Boxing Association were the ones who gave Krasniqi a high #2 ranking based on wins over four little known opponents.

Krasniqi wasn’t made to fight someone that could potentially knock him out and totally dominate him like Artur Beterbiev, who the WBA has ranked well below Krasniqi at #11 for some reason.

It doesn’t make much sense, because Beterbiev has already beaten the better opposition than Krasniqi despite the fact that he’s only fought 7 times since turning pro.

The Braehmer vs. Krasniqi winner will likely face former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly. That’s the name that is being mentioned to face the winner. Cleverly was beaten by Tony Bellew in his last fight in a failed effort to move up in weight to the cruiserweight division.

Now it looks like Cleverly will be getting an immediate title shot at 175 despite the fact that he’s lost two out of his last four fights. Talk about making it easy for Braehmer.

If the WBA sanctions a fight between Braehmer and Cleverly, they’ll be putting Braehmer in a perfect position for another successful title defense. However, at some point in the future the WBA is going to wind up ranking Beterbiev at #1, and at that point Braehmer will need to take a real test.

I can’t see him winning that fight or even coming close to winning. But if the WBA takes their time in pushing Beterbiev up the ranking, then Braehmer will have it cushy for a long time to come with easy title defenses against obscure opposition.

Krasniqi has won his last four fights since getting beaten by Cleverly in 2013. It’s good that Krasniqi has turned his career around with four straight wins, but the unfortunate part is that he’s done it against weak opposition.
