Roach: Pacquiao will be performing a public service for boxing in beating Mayweather

floyd543By Chris Williams: For some people like trainer Freddie Roach, he sees superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr (47-0, 26 KOs) as being totally disrespectful and in need of a defeat to bring him down to earth. Roach thinks that Mayweather needs to be knocked off his high horse, and he believes that his fighter Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2m 38 KOs) is just the person to do it when the two get inside the ring on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Roach thinks that Mayweather needs to be beaten for the good of the sport. It seems that Roach sees Pacquiao as the perfect role model for fans to follow; while Mayweather is seen by Roach as being more or less the opposite of that.

“Floyd is so disrespectful. Manny is the perfect role model for this fight and Mayweather is not,” Roach said via the Dailymail.co.uk. “I told Manny we’ve got to beat him for the whole world. There’s no way we can’t win this fight. Manny will be performing a public service for boxing when he beats Floyd.”

Roach has broken it down to simple terms with Pacquiao representing all that’s good in boxing, and Mayweather all that’s bad. It’s too bad that Roach sees things in such a manner, because you can make an argument that Roach’s view is distorted with him seeing things upside down. Mayweather is loved by fans from all around the boxing world, and I think he inspires fans to want to be like him.

When Mayweather shows off his wealth, his fabulous houses, plane and his incredible lifestyle, I think it sends a message to boxing fans that they too can have a life like this if they work hard enough. Besides that, Mayweather is a great role model with how hard he works in the gym.

When fans see how hard Mayweather is willing to work by working out in the early morning hours and not taking breaks between exercises, it shows that this is the kind of way people need to work in order to get ahead in life. The fans don’t even have to be involved in sports. If they study in school the same way Mayweather dedicates himself to his craft, they can accomplish anything.

Roach is hoping that Mayweather will stand and trade with Pacquiao in an all-out war on May 2nd, because Roach sees this as giving Pacquiao a great chance of winning the fight.

“Floyd’s legs don’t move like they once did. He’s very clever but the fight is so big he may feel like he has to take a risk and exchange with us,” Roach said. “If he does that, that’s the best thing in the world for Manny in my mind.”

I think Roach has got it wrong. If Mayweather chooses to slug with Pacquiao, it could very well turn out badly for Pacquiao, with Mayweather wearing the 36-year-old out with his sharp counter shots, and with the fast pace of the fight.

If you look really closely at Pacquiao’s last two fights against Chris Algieri and Tim Bradley, you’ll see that Pacquiao was only able to fight hard for a little over a minute during rounds.

After that, he needed to take a long two minute break during the remaining of the rounds. Pacquiao fights hard at that the start of the round, but then he gasses out and needs to take a long break. Pacquiao looked gassed out completely after the 1st round in his second fight against Bradley last year, and it looks like it took Pacquiao a couple of rounds before he regained his wind.

If Mayweather pushes the fight at a fast pace against Pacquiao on May 2nd, I can see Mayweather beating Pacquiao up and taking advantage of his sloppy fighting style, especially after Pacquiao gets tired and starts fighting on fumes.
